Land Rover Defender Thermostat

  Clio 182
The mothers Land Rover Defender 90 300 TDI has always taken ridiculous time to reach operating temperature since they got it, and even on some quite long journeys wouldnt even get there on a cold day. Obviously this isnt good for the engine especially with the heater set to permanent hot to feed her constant requirement for warmth sapping the very little accumulated heat.

A few of their friends with Defenders said this was normal but I was pretty sure it wasnt, and first thing that came to mind is the thermostat.

At a tenner for a genuine Landy part it was worth a try.

The thermostat housing couldnt be in an easier place, and even at an ergonomic height to work on, with checker plate either side to rest the tools on

Fill cap off the housing

Header tank hose and top hose removed

The elbow to the radiator needs to be removed to access the thermostat, just 2 bolts, thermostat removed

Just as suspected the thermostat was stuck open, meaning the coolant was always passing through the radiator and taking ages or never even warming the engine up at all. The gap was actually quite big, hard to capture in a photo.

For the first time in our ownership it will actually warm up just idling on the drive for a few minutes!

Happy with that,

Just for info if anyone else has had this issue,

Cheers
