SERV is normally accompanied by a system light such as ABS, SRS or EM.

When you turn the car on check all these lights turn on and if not there's most likely an issue with one of the warning lights.

Cheers mick
ive done the dash test which illuminates all the lights,

and now looking the ABS warning isnt lighting up, so im assuming the previous owner has blacked out the warning light,

would a basic code reader be able to pick up ABS faults or would it be a more specialist tool?

thanks
Adam

No, ABS is not normally accessible by generic EODBII I'm afraid but there are some that will.

Your best bet is to get it to a local garage for the cheapest code reading session you can find.

  Many.
Most basic readers can't get ABS codes, some can't even go into the ABS.

Get it to a decent garage, or somebody with decent equipment.

Edit: Thats why I should refresh pages before replying! Doh.

That should also have been accompanied by the SRS warning lamp to. The SERV lamp is there to say "this needs attention"
