iPhone from USA

If I buy an iPhone from an Apple store in USA will it work over here with an O2 sim in? Or do they vary slightly from country to country in terms of comparability?

Nope, while it will work to an extent it wont ever be compatible with LTE in the UK (i'm presuming iPhone 5)

Will be impossible to resell.
