Interested in a 172 Cup however.................

  Mini GP2
Hi guys,

Advice appreciated here......

I have seen what looks to be a decent 172 Cup for sale however i spoke to the seller today and it turns out the car isn't reading the actual mileage. A few years back the car had a fault with the dials and they were replaced by Renault and there is a receipt to confirm this so the mileage is less than the actual mileage on the engine, box and shell. Furthermore, the cambelt was changed back in 2011 along with the dephaser however that was also the last time it was serviced. The car has covered 14k since the work was carried out and is obviously due a service now which i dont mind paying as there is a decent specialist very local to me. I would have expected Renault to have reset the new dials to correspond with the actual mileage. The dealer stated there was a ticking sound coming from the dials hence why they were replaced by Renault.

I am in two minds what to do really, should i make an appointment to view it or do i walk away and anticipate another nice 172 Cup pops up soon. The dealer was quite honest and i dont think he was trying to take the mick. The car is up for 3k so it is top money for an OEM 172 Cup. The car has covered 52k miles and is a 2004 registered example.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

i would get the mot number and check online .. (each mot states the mileage ) maybe contact Renault ,who replaced the clocks, ask why wasn't they reset... i think £3000 is a lot... maybe that's the price at a dealers.... if everything checks out, test drive it..so if you look at another, have something to compare it too..

3k for a cup is too much IMO unless of course it's as new with mega low miles

Yeah, for 3k I'd want a mint Cup with no doubt over it's past, not worth it IMO, you'll struggle with resale - if you went to sell it the day after buying it I reckon you'd struggle for get 2k for it.

Id still want £3k for my cup if I was to sell it, and i'm pretty confident i'd get that for it too.

Agreed I would want 3k+ for mine.

But back to you question, if there is a doubt in your mind trust your instincts and walk away. There will be other cars that will come up for sale

It's not easy to find a good 172 Cup. They're old cars. I looked two years ago at five so called good examples and they were all a pile of c*ap. 3k is about 1k too much even for a decent 10-11 year old RS Clio. I'd look instead for a proper 182 Cup for 3k.

A minter is hard to find

Same ere Jamie. I would want £3500 for mine minimum

Mileage wise mine isn't the lowest, its done 85k, however I know that everything its ever needed its had, and not many 1*2's on here get that treatment.

It's not standard car, and whilst the modifications don't add any true value to the car, each one has improved it, and underneath the modifications its a great car. There aren't many Clio's i'd want over it.

I'm sure your much the same Kyle.

85k is below average plus your cup is sexy lol. We have certainly spent a fortune between us & their both much better cars for it. Mines just rolled onto 54k lol

Not sure if I have seen your cup Jaime, but have seen your Kyle and its very nice.

Mine has just ticked over 40k and spent a fair bit on it. Seen cups with 3 times the mileage and much worse condition go for 2k, so not sure why people say a mint one isn't worth 3k+

As others have said you will struggle to shift it come resale as it is always going to have this doubt over it. I'd just walk away and find another, there are plenty of nice ones about if you prepared to wait.

The instrument panel cannot be programmed with mileages. It starts from 0 but there is a note put onto renaults network that pops up when the reg of the vehicle is entered and it says that the panel has been replaced and it gives the mileage and date
