Insurance...;O

  BMW 120d
Morning Gents,

Currently looking at picking up a FF 182 as need to start thinking about buying a house. Currently I'm in a BMW 120d M Sport but a lot of my cash is tied up in it so for deposit purposes I've decided to sell and get something a bit more cheap and cheerful in the 182 (here come the expensive maintenance comments).

Just been looking around and can pick one up for around 2-2.5k which is reasonable, however what I don't understand are the insurance pricing I'm getting? Granted I could look harder and get something marginally cheaper but its still extortionate.

I currently pay £600 a year on my considerably more expensive 2 litre 180hp turbo diesel 1 Series and this is where I'm getting confused. Quotes on a 182 are coming back minimum £1700. I have been driving for 4 years with 4 years NCD. Can anyone shed some light to this? Is it just a fact that these cars are expensive to insure as most get wrapped round a tree? Interested to see what you lot have to say.

Cheers
Sam

I'm 21 but most likely will be 22 by the time in I'm in one. I'm with direct line at the moment but I know they aren't very fond of insuring performance cars, especially when you mention modifications to them!
Try Greenlight, Adrian Flux etc.

I pay £350, 23, 5yrs ncb.
That's really good, I'll give them a try

I'm with Admiral for my relatively stock cars, but I am ancient and have many moons of NCB, lol!

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Similar NCD and time driving as you. 25yo.
Quotes from the normal insurance companies were crazy high last year (1500+).

The four specialists mentioned were in the 650 -750 region.

Weirdly, my previous insurer on my golf (elephant) actually offered to match the 650 quote, despite originally quoting 1500 quid... Bit ridiculous.

Yeah I'd give Greenlight a call. £290, 6 years NCB, 27
Yeah I put in an online quote for them , waiting to hear back.

And yeah the obcene quotes was from admiral/elephant which is interesting. I spoke with my current insurer directline and they came to £1000 which is okay I guess? I still have 6 months left on my policy so might be worth paying the difference until I renew then go to a specialist, but if the specialist comes back super cheap then ill just loose the 6 months ncd no doubt

Because the admiral group are arseholes. It's such a shame no other companies can come close to their prices because I'd love to switch.

When I rang for a quote on the Audi (they quoted an identical, 2 years older car for £360), they decided to try and charge me £800ish.

I was like wtf, why? It's two years younger and the reg is different. Why so much more?

Oh, my colleague added discount to get it down to £360

...well add the discount too.

Yes, ok that's showing up as £360 too.

If you want to release even more funds just pick up a ropey Fiesta/Focus for £750, insure it for £250, you've saved yourself a further £2.5k. Cashback!

You know, I had a similar problem when I bought my 1 series. I called Directline and said give me a quote on the faster and newer 123d that I was going to buy, they said yeah fine etc... That car didn't work out so I ended up with an older 120d with less power... Directline couldn't insure me on it full stop, cancelled my policy and only wavered the admin fee, didn't get any money back. Was so stupid and then a year later, I went back to them and they quoted me my current policy at £600... Its so backwards I tell you

Haha yes that is an option however, I'm a little speed addict and want to get in the fastest well setup car I can for as little money as possible... I believe the 182 ticks all those boxes! Plus there's always the option to convert to a track car once fund are more permitting and I can get myself into something nice again (M140i) ;)

It's especially good when you consider that they mirrored my insurance onto another car which is a 1.2 8v 02 plate clio I use for driving to work, and that was £250 haha

Pretty good, went for a quote online and came back with some of the details I provided is unsuitable for them to give me with a quote, recommended me to go to their broker site. Maybe because I'm 21? Can't think anything else other than age would stop me from getting a quote, odd.
