Induction for Cup 172

  Pink & Blue 182, JDM DC2

HI everyone!

Im a bit of a Noob on here, but if you look around youll see me on other websites, including my own.

Ive got a 2002 RS Clio Cup 172, and was wondering about induction. My baby does tend to get pretty roasting hot so am unsure about what induction kit to choose.

I honestly cant justify spending £200+ on a BMC Carbon filter or a PiperX Viper, so have the option of a green filter, K&N 57i or a normal PiperX. Anyone got any ideas or opinions - would be greatly appreciated.

Simon

Go for a panel filter instead - normal induction kits tend to lose bhp as they get a nice filter-full of hot air from the engine bay.

Alternatively, if you are determined to have an induction kit, then some sort of shielding arrangement can be used to try and seperate it from the hot bits of the engine bay.

Yeah that sounds good. Do you recommened any small BHP gain products for the Clio Cup? I see yours is 182bhp - care to exaggerate [;)]

Obviously I want to go up up up, but need some direction. My mate who has a Clio Cup is going to get K&N 57i - probably a bad idea I think.

Would a panel filter help me out?

A panel filter might give a couple of bhp, nothing spectacular. Youll find lots of posts on the subject of getting more bhp from the 172 mill on here - have a swatch.

In essence, its not the easiest of engines to extract more horses from, mainly due to the lack of development work thats been done by the commercial tuners, and the resulting lack of bits for them at the moment. Youll not get a lot more out of an already tuned NA motor without spending a serious amount of dosh - throttle bodies with appropriate ignition control etc. Still, an exhaust and filter will help the car breathe a bit better and release some extra horses, as well as making it sound more like it should ;)

Im sure some of our more knowledgeable members can add something to this...

Hehe did someone mention Throttle Bodies? LoL

theyre coming on, watch this space, as my car goes off on tuesday, there will be a thread to watch the developments on :D

Mmmm throttle bodies. That would be very nice!! :)

Im going to be having a look through see what I can find.

Rich, Spoke to k-tec at the show and they said that kit was for the 1.4/1.6 model,

They suggested that the viper kit was the best, but it is just toooo expensive for the power gain, also they are not resellers for K&N.

Spoke to K&N at the show but they said that they will not be bringing out a generation II kit for the 172 which would have been the answer to our probs. However they have brought out a normal 57i kit for the 172 2001> But it doesnt come with a heat shield. The guy at K&N said that it doesnt need one.

However in my opinion I think the best option is to get a K&N 57i kit and then get a heat shield from somewhere, K&N sounds the best and usually gives best performance for the price

Also if you want to talk to essexracing about the turbo you need to email a guy there called paul who specialises in clios, He says that it would be a lox boost kit as the C/R on the cup is 11:1 and most normal turboed cars run at 8:1, but should still get about 30bhp, worth looking at if you ask me!

So why is there a photo of one fitted to a 172 on the website then?

Also, the K-Tec website says "Available from mid July 03 for the Clio 2 1.4 16v, 1.6 16v, 172 and Cup" so Id say they told you fibs.

Aye, the Viper aint cheap!

Well, Id rather not have an "open" induction kit under that bonnet unless it was well fed with cold air...

Yeah, when I get the car Ill take a look and see what can be done, as I am an engineer and can soon manufacturer a heatshield or summat.

Nah, I dont want a turbo on the Clio, as I have a modded R5 GT Turbo already, so I can get my whoosh fun with that!

what exactly have hill power done for the 172? my standard one made more power than their car i think!!

yes best idea by far. It will cost you £35 or so and youre spoilt for choice: ITG, Green, BMC. The extra £150-180 is not really justified for a BMC or viper unless you want the noise.

Funnily, noisy induction is very useful sometimes as a "get out of my way" signalling device on track. No such thing as sneaking up to a car to overtake with one of these babies.

So if you want noise, get a BMC SP08 for £170 (I did) or spend £200+ on a viper.
