Identify a knackered abs pump/servo?

Hi all, just bought a 172 with a weird brake fault, occasionally when pressing the brakes the pedal goes rock hard and the brakes don't engage at all, you can feel a slight pulsation from the abs too. This is completely random and there's no pattern to it. I just decked it on a clear open road and then tried to brake and had a good 50-70 yards of no brakes, the cv boot was off the passenger side which I've put back on as I assumed it was grease on the ring but obviously not. The front rings are fine, haven't had chance to check the rears yet. Could this be the pump/servo?
Thanks!
