how much oil is required with an oil filter change? And what viscosity?

5w-30 fully synthetic oil, you will need to buy a 5L container and from my experience need around 4.85l for a full oil change.
remove the fuel rail guard using a 10mm socket to access the oil filter. plenty of tissues under the oil filter as you remove it as it spills easily. You will ned a 8mm square tool to remove the sump plug. buy a sump plug washer when buying the genuine renault oil filter.
check out opie oils in the traders section for tips on what brand oil. my recommendation is titan race pro.

5w/30... Is it Diesel or in a different climate to ours?

Normally 5w/40 to RN0700/0710 and 5l with a genuine filter will be just fine.

Why would you not do it from underneath? As you're under there for sump plug anyway? Genuine question.

As said 5ltr good make fully synth oil,with a good filter tool you can slide hand under fuel rail and remove easily,underneath you would have to remove covers if still in place,why make more work for yourself ?

Means removing the under tray*? Which is more of a pain in the arse than two bolts to remove the fuel rail guard.

Into the rag that you hold underneath the filter as you undo it....


Or it floats around on top of the under tray cos you can't be arsed to remove it :)

Try it. With the undertray comes off there is almost no room to get to the oil filter from underneath short of tearing your hand to shreads or removing guards from the bottom of the bumper. OTOH maybe I have large hands but I doubt it! My 1.4 Clio was not much easier, proven by me tightening up the oil filter due to it being loose via removing the fuel rail guard.

If you removed it from underneath would you not run the risk of getting oil on yourself. Never thought of doing it from underneath.

Many thanks for that tip. I have the other type of fluted oil filter removal tool which of course is useless on the Clio but that item looks spot on :). I always used a cloth band type removal tool for mine.

On another note the Clio 172 is not the easiest car to change the oil on but I have had worse. Changing the oil on a 944 for example (especially a Turbo) is a PITA, and leaves you cleaning up the engine for ages. Which idiot would put an oil filter upside down fairly high up in the engine bay?

I've never thought of doing it from the top, I'll give it a try if I ever get a Clio again.

Which Fiesta ST do you have? If it is the 2.0 ST150 they are a piece of cake to do an oil and filter change on in comparison to many cars I have owned!

I changed my filter from the top without removing the injector cover.

I removed the rubber bonnet seal across the front to stop it getting damaged, and used a 3 prong type filter removal tool.
