Hey - Possible New Owner

Hey Guys,

I'm Simon from North Yorkshire. I work and live in York and I'm looking at getting a phase2 172.

Off to view one in Leeds tomorrow and hopefully all the numbers will be right and I will be back in a hot hatch.

Can anyone point me towards some threads on what to look for when buying 172's?

The best advise I can give is become a member - it's only £12 and it will give you access to all the info you need, but as a very basic check list:

Cambelt needs doing every 72k OR 5 years which ever comes first - this needs to be done by someone with the correct tools and who knows how to do it - otherwise the timing will be out and it will be circa 25bhp down on power.

Obviously they get used hard, so check for accident damage and abuse

knocking under accelleration and on/off throttle is usually worn engine mounts

make sure all electrics work!

Its a 2003 model, what spec will it likely to have as standard?

Hi there welcome to the club mate. Am not to far from you I think so would be good to meet up if you sort your new motor. Cambelt won't be too exspensive and is defo worth the money compared to price of parts and labour if all goes pop.

Cambelt will be circa £450 mate, though one of thge specialists has a deal on at the mo for £350!

Hoping to hear back from a garage today about one I went to see yesterday.

Was silver and completely standard 172, has climate, factory satnav and the usual spec and was up for £2700 and has had the belts replaced.

Unless it was something special 2.7k for a silver 172 is a fair chunk OTT-

but obviously a dealer has to price to make some money-
