Help with GF's Golf Gti ...

Ok, bit unorthodox asking on a Clio forum but the userbase here was always more knowledgeable than the gti forums I've frequented.

The wifes MkV GTi has a concerning issue when driving, the car 'moves' noticeably when driving on roads that are relatively smooth.... It's very hard to describe -

We can drive along a smooth road with little camber and it 'wobbles' but not in the way a buckled wheel would (faster as speed increases) it just shifts left/right, more notably on pitted tarmac roads like the right hand lane of this road ..

The car seemingly changes direction 2/3 times while actually maintaining a straight line but it certainly moves side to side, almost as if on every rotation the wheels are pointing in opposite directions..

It also seems to happen a lot when the car is "tramlining" on the white lines in the middle of the road (merging onto motoerways, changing lanes etc)

I don't really want to pay £60ph to not find the cause, wheel bearings seem fine - I jacked it up and checked, I am guessing it's likely to be wheel/tyre related but could it be suspension/axel related?

  Whichever has fuel
Could be lots of things.

Subframe, steering rack, wishbones....

Is there a VW specialist near you?

Mr.Potato

There's a few 'claiming' to be but I couldnt find a garage online that's known to specialise in in VW's and reputable... I dont mind travelling and leaving the car with the best guys to fix it though. I just dont want to throw a few hundred at it and not find the issue, we only bought the car in Feb for £6k but didn't notice it so much on the test drive.

Are you still Northampton way? There are quite a few VW specialists in MK area - we personally use TotalVAG in Leighton as they're local and my other half went to school with the owner. Good and won't charge you for something that doesn't need doing.

VAGTech are also good, but a little pricier and there's APS at Brackley with a good reputation.

  Many.
Alignment issue causing tyres to wear oddly, adding to the issue IMO.

Bit like the rear issue of "sawtoothing" as the vag people call it.

edit, before somebody else says it... Pics of gf?

Bubbles - Yeah still in Northants, I looked up VAGTech but like I say, didn't seem any reviews as favourable as the CS based specialists so was unsure... Thanks for the recommendations.

I always think other members should when asked so it'd be hypocritical if I didn't
