Help please, drive shaft came out, need help refitting

  ph quick
Working on my mates ph1 172

Changing ball joint and discs, passenger side driveshaft came out, oil has all come out etc... Got the clip off the gator etc pushed it back in, is there a certain way it has to go, its gone all the way back in but i cant turn the axle when its out of gear, is that normal or have i put it in wrong?

Also we'll need a new clip to seal the gator onto the bearing, can a jubilee clip be used or is it part that needs to be bought?

Cheers

Also what kind of oil does the gearbox take and where is the filler? All i could see was the drain on the bottom...

Theres a fill level plug on the front of the box, just fill it until it comes back out then your at the right level.

HELP! Just put it all back together and driven it like 50m, the gearbox is making a awful metro like whine! what have I done to the driveshaft! AHH!

  ph quick
They were there when I put it back in. I dont really know, i pushed it back in and it seemed to go in fine. the gearbox feels normal at low speed, but then it starts "whining" at anything more. so i stopped and reversed it home. have i completely screwed it?

  ph quick
yes 3 litres of 75/90. the circlip seems to have gone on fine
just had it jacked up, and spinning 50 in fifth fine. there is no noise when there is no strain... it seems

right, passengers side shaft came out, there are 3, 13mm headed bolts holding the gaiter to the box, how did the shaft come all of the way out?

  ph quick
Like with others, the factory fitted stainless jubilee clip (circlip) on the outboard end of the rubber gator popped off, letting the oil out, and leaving the bearing that the gator is attached to exposed. It required very little stress to do this and nothing looked damaged in any way. I undid the 3 bolts to refit the gator, and then put a jubilee clip on after. Thanks for helping mate.

so when you refit the gaiter to the shaft, you then bolted the 3 bolts up, was the shaft definately sat right in the box??, you should when them bolts are in and tight be able to feel that the shaft is sat right, was it hard to get in at the hub end? from what you have said there is very little chance anything is damaged! more than likely not sat right, therefore stressing the bearings and making the whine.

  ph quick
yeh it might not be sat right, this is the first time ive removed a drive shaft. I did not take it out of the hub, beacause I had no way of undoing the end bolt, so I just undid the shock so I could get free movement. Initially I could not turn the axle in neutral by the hub, only when it was in gear. But as soon as I spun it with the disk on it seemed to free up. When the wheel was on it seemed not great, but pretty free. Now that the engine has turned over it seems completely free.
How can I get it to sit right?

  Mondeo TDCI 130
well, ideally you need to undone the ball joint and take it out, this will give you some free on the shaft, if you pull the hub outwards SLOWLY, you will understand what i mean, if you turn the shaft as you push it back in you will feel when its sat right, sort of slides in!

  ph quick
Yeh the ball joint was undone, and to get more movement, due to the shock being at full extension I undid that too. It slid in, and seemed to feel right. Do you mean I can pull it out of the gearbox without draining the gearbox oil? thanks

  Mondeo TDCI 130
only a little bit! but enough to locate it right!! you dont need to undo the 13mm bolts at all!! its quite common for them to pop out when your working on the hub.

I may have crushed the gaiter bearing with the jubilee clip? I did try and do it up erm, nice and tight...

  ph quick
Yeh it probably isnt that. So you think it is most likely that I just have put the driveshaft in twisted? I dont quite understand how that is possible, but if it is im sure I could find a way of doing it.!

right not to put too fine a point to it but you are now screwed, the joint in question is whats known as a tripod joint, uses 3 rollers on needle bearings, if you pull the joint out of the box theres a good chance that the needle rollers have fallen down in to the gearbox, and now you have driven it they are dispersed all through your gearbox. they will also be what are jamming your box up. do hope this hasnt happened as its going to be a box strip down and new joint.
i've had it happen to me a couple of times but detected it straight away and fished the rollers out with a magnet on a stick.

It doesnt seem to have actually stopped working and the noise is not particularly loud, when driven on jacks... should i take it all apart and see what has happened to the tripod then? Is there a way of telling whether the tripod has collapsed, turning the wheel etc? Is the tripod alone replaceable. I am amazed how easily it has broken. thanks

drain the oil, undo the 3 13's on the gaiter, pop the bottom balljoint off and pull the shaft out the gearbox end carefully, you will see the 3 bearings, and you will see all the needles under them, will be pretty obvious if you have a problem, the joint is replacable i beleive they are normally splined to the shaft and have a circlip holding it on. although if a needle has fell out your biggest problem is getting it out of the box

them bearings shouldnt just 'falll off'! unless your very unlucky in my opinion, yhe apprentice at work had one fall off the other day, but he was trying to change it and hit it with a hammer! fuckin needle bearings everywhere!:dapprove:

Yes, thanks guys, looks like its going to rain today so I dont think ill be looking at it today, can wait to see if there are any other opinions. thanks

YAY got it sorted, it wasnt the tripod bearing at all!
It was the ABS ring that had moved by a mm or so, and therefore was binding on the sensor or something. Just tapped it back into place and it work again. Phew, panic over.!

HELP! Just put it all back together and driven it like 50m, the gearbox is making a awful metro like whine! what have I done to the driveshaft! AHH!

What is that?! It was a distinctive sound to a metro, like a boxer is to a subaru! What is that whiney sound?!

Sorry! Just searched 'metro whine' cos my mates 182 does it ever so slightly and the best way to describe the noise was the sound the old MG and Austin metro's used to do. This was the only thread that mentioned it. Are you not supposed to revive old threads?

I suppose it doesn't matter if it's related to your problem, but don't expect the guy to reply after all this time.

Nah I don't expect them too but might get a response from a nosey reader :)

You know what I mean about the old metros whining? The old MG 1.3 my mums mate had did it all the time, you knew it was her driving off without looking out the window! Mates at college had the same thing (yes I'm old, people had metro's at college in my day).

I've never seen one, but I'm only 19 ;)
Everyone knows I'm coming when I brake, my pads squeal so much!

19?! Ahhhhhhh yes. I'd say I remember those days, but I can't. Hazy bob marley style mess.

When I were a lad, the dream first time car was a Nova 1.3 SR! Or a GTE/ Escort RS Turbo/R5 GTT if you were minted and had £2k to throw at insurance.
