Gutted

My ph2 172's gearbox decided to eat itself on the way home from work today. It started whining loudly this morning, then wouldn't go into 1st and then bang. AA towed me home, we struggled getting it onto the drive as the gearbox kept jamming.

I have no idea what to do with it now. It's an 02 plate with 82k on the clock.

It's going to cost me over a grand to fix up as I don't have any mechanical knowledge at all on how to get the box off.

Do I just scrap it??

Surely it won't cost a grand? Pick up a second hand box £100-200 and removal of a box is only 5.2 hours if I remember? So average £35 a hour plus vat works out just over £200. So less then £500 so not that bad. But obv gutted for ya it happened twice to me on my ZS.

  Flame 172 (Ph2)
Surely you can get a second hand box for cheap and then its just labour at an independent?

My friends gearbox in his Stilo went, go the whole thing in and out and then refurbished for £600 all in.

It's not going to cost you over a grand mate, mine went bang at 70mph and jammed in two gears,
£270quid got me another box from a breakers, you can get them cheaper on here, around £200.

Then if you know absolutely no-one who can swap it for you,
then Fred@BTM (Brum) or Danny@519 (Bedford) can do it for a couple of hundred quid,
but obviously their quotes may differ.

It's a chunk of money, but it's not a grand.

Can you not get the AA to take ya there if you call them again if u say my car won't move etc and play dump again. And ask to be taken to garage to help have it fixed.

Get a few mates, drop it out on the drive lol can't be that hard, allow a few weeks if you have no idea :p

  Arctic 182, GTD
Theoretically yeah but then if you can drop it why not fit the new one? Lol just do every thin in reverse.

Does it free wheel with the clutch in?

When mine shat itself and was stuck in two gears the clutch still worked,
so when the recovery truck came, I sat in it so it could be towed onto the flatbed.

I don't think it does free wheel judging by how it wouldn't go onto the drive.

I got my gearbox for £100, then got it fitted for £150 and and extra £20 for gearbox oil. Its not what you know its who you know ;) just ask around and see if anyone would do it privately, works out so much cheaper.

Out of gear with the clutch up it was trying to stall so I reckon the clutch has gone too. The clutch was quite high anyway.

That's another £100quid on the bill then.

But it's best to change the clutch when you swap boxes, especially if it's an old one.

Yeah the clutch needed doing anyway. It's just getting the thing to a garage that's the problem.

I've just changed a sump on a 172 that had a box done at a "local independent". They cracked the sump getting the box back on. Careful who you let work on your car

Mine went a few months ago I was looking at £400 if there wasn't any major damaged but there was so it was £550 i got a new clutch which was £116 velcon one, so cost me £700+. I couldn't find a second hand gearbox near me, garages near me charge around £150 to swap a box

I got the AA to tow me to the garage where my gearbox was going to be done, if not you can get a tow pole I brought one off eBay for £24 makes towing dead easy

It won't tow mate, the car won't move. Front wheels need raising off the floor.

I'm looking about £100 for a clutch.

Mine went on my 182 a few months back. I was getting silly quotes for fixing it/new box from Renault etc but after a few phone calls, buying a reconditioned second hand box from a nice member on here, ordering a new clutch and having it all fitted the total bill was under £700. Luckily mine was just about drivable so managed to limp it to a garage.

I'm going to source a new box off here, clutch off ebay and probably get the driveshafts done whilst i'm at it.

Is there a way I can tow it, without it constantly nose diving??

What is speedo drive I keep reading about? Has my 172 got that on it's gearbox?

It should tow fine as it would be in any gear, I towed mine for a 10mins to get to the garage, speedo drive is the sensor that plugs into the top of the gearbox on the older and cup boxes as they didn't come with abs if you car has abs it has the speedo on that, try euro car parts they do a gen clutch for £116

It's a standard 172 non cup so I would have thought without speed drive as it deffinitely has ABS.

The speedo went a bit dodgy last year and a Renault specialist fixed it for me. Apparently a sensor had gone but he said 'on the gearbox'.

Sounds like speed drive to me?

  Lots of Scrap...
the early phase 2's had a sensor in the gearbox where the speedo cable goes, just like the phase 1 cars, later models had a gearbox with no speedo drive and used ABS for speedo

you need a box with a speedo drive it sound like, so phase 1 or early phase 2 172 box. get it confirmed first though. and if your paying a garage to do it and they are local they should be able to recover the car for not too much money. save that try to find a person local with a dolly or similar to get fronts off the floor. I had same issue when my mk1 ate the gearbox and it would pop into and out of gears as the box turned even though selector was in neutral

It's an 02 plate so it's possibly the one with speedo drive then. How can I confirm which box it is? Can Renault tell me if I ring them.

Thanks

Most cars I've driven that have got abs you can feel it every now and then you get clicking when braking that's the abs cutting in

most ph2's have the sensor, it's only 182's, and the odd very late crossover 172 that don't

£1000 seems a bit steep I'd expect to pay for a gearbox and clutch and fitting no more than £500.

Where are the meets around Coventry Dave? I need to get to know people incase the same happens to me.

This :)

don't the AA use towing dolly's to tow vehicles? i.e. the front wheels would be off the ground anyway, just the rears on the road
