Gearbox broken????? 172 ph1

I took my car to a mechanic last night and he seems to think that my gearbox has gone

Syptoms
- Whining noise coming from passennger side when accelerating
- grinding noise when i lift off the accelerator
- Seems to select gears fine and makes the same noise in all gears

Do you think he is correct.. or pos trying to earn a quick buck?

Your help would be appreciated!

Sounds like the Diff' or maybe input shaft bearings.
