FILTER THEORY? WHAT YOU SAY?

  MK5 Fiesta Zetec S
just a THEORY i am NOT going to do this just a question dont slate me i was just curious!

Open cone filters decrease performance but sound good!

enclosed filters have a high price for little or no performance gains and not much induction sound

panel filters give the best performance increase (still minimal) no sound

So in theory a way to get the best of both worlds is to bring back the 1980's modification is to get a panel filter and drill the airbox?

By best of both worlds i mean in theory of money - sound - more airflow

(this theory doesnt apply to the people who have a v6 airbox - more toward people with 1.2 1.4 and 1.6 engines)

Problem being heatsoak, this being the main reason an open cone is generally a bit poo. so if you start drilling holes in the standard box you'll suffer pretty much the same problem. you never get much of a gain from induction changes generally, so if you want noise you may aswell go for a cone with a good cold air feed, otherwise just stick with a standard housing with a panel filter.
Been there done that with a drill (on a mates previous escort). complete waste of time and effort, plus the engine bay looked a bit pikeyish afterwards:eek:

Orrrrrrr just get a pipercross/itg panel filter and remove the lower feed?

I like to have the best of everything so I shelled out for a 2nd hand maxogen.

heatsoak wouldnt be a problem with the mexhaust manifold at the rear tbh

but if you drill your airbox you deserve beats ;)

standard with panel is rete

an just disconnect the feed when you want it to "roar"

on some cars switching the standard box to proper enclosed induction kit can give you decent gains, open filter on any car is a bit pants performance wise but ye sounds good,

as for drilling the box, you haters, iv done it and it sounds ace with no noticable loss in power, drilled just a few holes on the battery side to avoid heat soak (less then you would get from removing the 2nd CAI imo, smoothing it removes the sound killing baffles and drilling it in the right place lets a little bit more sound out and cant be seen from the top (obv your drilling below where the filter is, and in my case beside the battery)

add a decent panel filter = :approve:

Despite having a top of the range IK, I agree with what fred says. The std filter is decent enough if changed to schedule. It does feel a little strangled at the top end though (increasing sucking noise).

I just got the JMS setup. Sounds awesome. Does it lose power? Meh I don't know. If anything it feels a lot less restricted but that might be because my car was due a service and my air filter was probably full of crap.
