Few 172/182 Questions

  ex Clio 172 owner :(

Ok, sold my RT in 03 and bought the VTS as a stop gap sort of.

Im now just about in the position of being able to afford a Sport Clio.

I went into Gateshead Renault yesterday and none came up on the search except a few pre reg 182s.

She phone me back later to say they were getting an 02 silver mk2 172 on Monday and its likely to go for £8k-8.5k. Shes asked me to come in and take a look. Price seems slightly steep.

Thing is I want newer. Ideally, Im after a 03 or 53 plate 172 for about £8.5k

Is that realistic?

I am planning to get it over 3 years on a Cahoot flexible loan so I can pay chunks off and get it down to maybe 2 years.

Whats the earliest reg that 182s are on?

If I really push the boat out I could go for a brand spanker 182 over 5 years and pay chunks off to make it 4 years. But even then 4 years is ages. Im 29 next month and still live at home  and am saving for a house deposit.

In two minds as to go for:

02 ish 172 over 3 years and have more money for myself.

04 ish 182 over 3 and have less money

55 182 and be skint!

Looking at Metallic Blacks 182 yesterday, made me think I shoudl hold out and wait for a decent 2nd hand 182 to become available.

Thanks.

Yeah I do love the VTS. Fast, very light and nimble, does everything I need. Just it doenst quite have the feel good factor for me personally.

Always liked Clios though. Spec, looks, image.

I already have some money saved but dont want to touch it. I should still be able to save £100 or so each month, added to what I already have, by 3 years I should have enough for a deposit.

Might be worth considering the 05 / 55 plate as an option, just because Renault are still doing their 0% finance deal over 3 years on the 182. Cheapest 3 year loan I could find was at 5.7% APR - worked out that the Renault 0% finance deal saves me about 900 squid over the three years.

Of course, the flipside to that argument is that youd lose several hundred pounds off what you paid the second you drove it off the forecourt.....

buy one second hand of someone on here, I had mine up for sale for 8500 that was 02 reg with 24k got £8100 trade in so you should easily be able to get something in the price range your looking at. If you can sell the VTS private stay away from dealers alltogether if you can!

I like Cups and nearly bought a pre reg one last year. I just didnt think it was much different to the VTS. Similar equipment and the VTS performance was much slower at all.

I love the way they look but want all the luxury items that come with a 172.

Think Im definetly heading for a nearly new 182. Tbh, even if I bought a new 182, it doesnt matter about losing £3k soon as I start it up. That only really matters if you plan to sell it when its a year or so old. Id keep it probably for four.

Id have a VTS back like a shot if they werent tin cans. Gotta love the MK2 Clios is that respect.

You not gonna gain much at all buying a 182 over youre VTS - only the toys and slightly better perforamce. Why not get something older and better for around the same money?

Its nice picking up a brand new car (ive done it twice) but the money you loose (on any car) aint worth it anymore!

Even if youre dead set of a 182 there are loads of second hand ones around with tiny miles on.

182_blue, like you told me, dont read them then! Did ye notice though, how I wasnt the only one thinking polishing is all thats ever discussed lately?

My mate has just been around in his 03 172 which hes trading in for an Impreza wrx in two weeks.

I had a quick drive of it, and while it doesnt really feel any quicker, it feels far more refined. It just feels like a better all round car. I was standing looking at it parked up thinking, how lovely does that look?

I think Ill get a new as possible silver 172. While I like the 182s, Im not really keen on any of the colours (lol I sound like a woman). The racing blue is nice but I prefer silver and the 182 silver is flat compared to the 172 silver.

Think Ill leave it until Agust though when I payed off a bit more of my current car and my insurance is up for renewal then, which incidentally isnt cheap. Its £780 fc, with no points, 6 yr protected ncb, 1 claim, 15k miles a year, sdp&c.

Adamf, Ive always like Clios ever since 94 in my mams RL. Always wanted a performance version. Nothing else really competes for me, I have my heart set on one.

Thanks for your comments.

Lol, well yeah I have thought of this, but you dont know what Im like....

Call me crazy but Id feel like it was always his. Normally when you buy second hand you dont know the owner. I want to feel like its mine from day one. Ive been after a hot Clio for so long, I want it to feel like mine, rather my mates.

I know the history of his and its in top notch condition, not been driven hard etc but I dunno... Im daft like that.

Awww ;)

I think you should go for the nearly new 182 over 4 years, and pay it off sooner if you can. That way you get more warranty/roadside assistance AND cruise control :D.

The handling is SO much better than my 172, Im so glad I swapped.

I sold my 172 for £6400 theyre worth peanuts mate

For the money your wanting to spend id say you could have an 04 plate 172 private

On autotrader all the prices are pie in the sky as most are trade

Go private and you can basically get the deal your looking for like the person who bought mine did, they didnt haggle a penny its a buyers market

Speaking from experience having gone from a Vts to a 182 i have to disagree.

The toys and better performance dont just make the 182 slightly better than a Vts,they make it massively better.

I am a huge Vts fan but its more than a slight difference in every department.

Just to add my tuppence worth on the main subject as well.Id bin the idea of a newer car and bang the car loan money into buying a house.

Owning a house is way better than any car IMO :)

  Silver 172 Mk2

I had to sell my mk1 172 2 yrs ago to buy my house.

2yrs later and im going to look at a black/gold 182 with cup extras tomorrow!

Have had to put up with a 1.6 Escort for 2 yrs so its about time i had a fast car again.

Gota make that decision. Go for the house and put the car off for couple of years or put the house off for couple of years. As for the comment of houses going down in price.... i just made 46 grand on mine!!!

I think im gonna have to disagree with you there, i too have done what you have, and ive found that certainly performance wise there is very little difference between the VTS and the 182, i think the fact that the 182 has more torque than the VTS confuses people into thinking its a real lot faster, when in fact it isnt, I personally would go back to a VTS like a shot if it wasnt for the fact that i feel a whole lot safer in the Clio

yeh just wanted you to know how irratating it was when people make pointless comments :D

Chris - Id set your budget at about £7.5k like you suggest and see what you can get. I managed to get Daipacs mint 02 reg 172 on 19k miles for £7.8k a few months ago.

I was also in the position of deciding whether or not to go for a new 182. Personally, I found the idea of paying twice as much for a very similar car a bit difficult to swallow. Theres a lot of choice of young, mint condition 172s out there to help you stay away from spending the money on a brand spanking new car.

I have no regrets about buying an almost 3-year old 172. It came with just enough balance of warranty to get anything major sorted and its been totally spot-on. Ive never had a car thats just needed fuelling, servicing and tyres!

i dont want to be a merchant of doom, but even in this steadier time of house prices, in 3 years times id wager that what ever you have saved, you will have lost out on price rises..get on the housing ladder now, if theres only a 3% rises per year. thats 10k extra on the crappests of houses,

I lost loads of money off my first two cars, which I had from brand new. Dont have a new one, is my only advice.

I picked up a 2 year old RS 172 Mk2 for £9300 in February 2004 and havent looked back since. And before everyone says that it was a lot for a 172, they didnt see how little the trade in on my Almera was, and how much I actually got out of the dealership for it.

My payments are peanuts!! Which is cool.

Oh, and personally I think that Saxos are the modern Nova (aka chav mobile), sorry but that is just my opinion.

Sadly many Saxos are modern novas as you put it. The VTS is one of the most underated cars ever made! How many chavs do you see driving real VTSs? not many ill wager! Most are Furios or VTRs. Smaller engined Clios also have that Chav imagine now! There are loads of 1.2s with crap bodykits and lexus lights! Even some RSs havent escaped the treatment!

The VTS (along with its Pug cousin) should be remembered like the R5 GT or the 205 GTi.

I agree Adamf! theyre rare to see, pretty rapid and prone to lift off oversteer!

Thanks for reminding me my steeds turned into a chav mobile :( my little lowered 1.2 dynamique with anthracite 17" oz sls used to look smart now the chavs get hold of them and put led washers on them!! luckily ive been saving and taken the plunge. Ive got a spanking new 182 cup in racing blue with recaros due for delivery on june 2nd though :D

Go for it Chris1.4rt, 182 or 172 you wont be dissappointed, mate just paid £9000 for a totally staright HPI clear 04 182 in arctic blue with 13000 on the clock privately, a bargin me thinks!

Simon

totaly agree about the vts!i got both, but im flash! the 172 is much better all round, but i think the saxo handles better.

  ex Clio 172 owner :(

Cheers guys.

Ive just been to see the 02 172 Ive mentioned in the first post.

Really nice. 48k miles though and they want £8500. Too high and too much.

They would give 12months warranty but I have to think how long Ill keep it.

Ideally, Id spend £9000-9500 on an 03/53 172 with < 20k on the clock.

Yeah the VTS is mint but starting to develop niggly faults. It was 3 year old when I bought it, and I dont want an already 3 year old 172 to head the same way.

Low mileage doesnt imply as much about the mechanical condition of the car as it used to in the olden days, but its worth getting a low-miler for ease of re-sale.

My low mileage Williams sold itself - and I expect that because I bought my 02 172 with 19k on the clock itll still be below average miles when I come to sell.

Yes Ben H is right.

My 51 reg 172 had only 15k on the clock when I brought it, which was genuine cuz I had it checked, and now just over three years old she has got 25400 on, which is still pretty good for a 3 and half year old car i think.
