Ex-172 and current CTR owner here having a look around!....

  Clio 172
Hello all

Just thought I would say hello really?! Been lurking on here quite a bit recently as I quite miss my 172 at the moment. I change cars quite a lot, had a couple of EP3 CTRs, one 172 and a whole host of big powered jap cars. Left the big power behind though as in today's economic climate, they just dont make sense any more, especially as I have a motorbike as well which is only a mediocre 600cc but much more exhilerating than a big power turbo and considerably cheaper to run too!

I do love the CTR, I really do, but I do miss the 'rawness' of my little Clio. And as the bottom of the Clio market seems to have fallen through the floor recently, Im toying with the idea of getting back into one!

Just wondered if anyone has gone from a CTR back to a Clio and what are your thoughts?

For info, here was my old Clio

Both good hot hatches in my imo (clio RS's & EP3's) but i can understand what you miss about the clio. Strike while the iron is hot in the clio market as you have mentioned there are some performance bargains to be had out there in the clio market...and they are awesome :) lol

I had a ep3 ctr, hated the power steering on it. Was alot better built than my clio, faster too. Quite like the clio though, longest I have had a car.

I'm biased but that Cup is mint! Civic looks crap/chav but I've never been a fan. Never driven one and have no desire to.

Bang for buck a 1*2 is hard to beat!

Ha I ride a motorbike and now taken a break and gone to cars!

Wold love a high performance jap car, even if it doesn't stand a chance against a bike.

Car looks nice :approve:

Want to make life easy and jump back into Clio ownership? I'm looking to buy a type r and in selling my 172 cup :)

86k- 5 former keepers

It had cambelt/Dephaser done last year at a local specialist, recent brakes, 4brand new toyos, Yozza stealth, Ktech decat, panel filter, Sabelt wheel, Vmaxx coilies. It's been kept with no expense spared, just got the bug for a change as I've had it 4 years and dont do any miles for work anymore. The Clio was used to cruise 200 miles a week previously, chosenitmover a civic originally for mpg!

I've had an ep3 CTR and am now in a 182. I have had 1 or 2 cars in between. I loved my CTR too bits and regret selling it. Both cars are superb. The Clio is better IMO in the twisties as it feels more planted to the road.

  172, Focus
I have a RS172 and a EP3 Type-R. The RS172 I use everyday for work and the Type-R is mainly wheeled out at the weekend, polished and then put back in the garage.
I will say at this point that I always wanted a EP3 way back when they were first released in I guess 2000/2001 and about a year and a half ago I bought my cosmic grey facelift Type-R.
About 5-6 months ago I bought my RS172 from the dealer i work for as I thought it would make a nice little project and would be ideal for the quick blast to work and would allow me to keep my Type-R for, um, sunday best!
However.....
Much to my surprise the little clio has totally won me over and I find myself driving it all the time. It's comfier, more economical, makes a better noise (lower down the rev range obviously), steering is better and it's better equipped.
I now know what James May meant when he mentioned about that fizz he gets inside when you drive a car. The Clio gives me the fizz, the Civic not so much.
I also like the subtlety of the Clio's styling, it's very understated which I think is pretty cool.
Don't get me wrong I admire the engineering of the Honda and its been 100% reliable, and I can't really complain about the lack of comfort or MPG or equipment as its a Type-R, that is what they are all about.
The fit and finish inside the Honda is superb, whereas just one look at the wonky glovebox in the Clio makes me cringe, but I love the Clio, I just can't put my finger on what makes it the better feeling hot hatch.
The thing is I would buy another 172, I wouldn't buy another EP3. It hurts my brain typing that sentence !
