Engine tuning!

I went to a engine diagnosis place behind my work the other day and asked how much it would cost to have a look at my clio. He said it costs £48 for an engine diagnosis, just wondering if thats a reasonable price and if anyone knows what might be up with my car. It seems to be idiling at all different revs and sometimes doesnt feel like its getting enough petrol to the engine, has anyone had this problem before?

Also what HT leads should I get for around £35?

And what brake pads should I get for around £30 for some valver calipers?

Cheers Danny.

Yeah, a rr tune costs me £50. Would be money better spent.

Standard leads should be less than £35, or you can get some Magnicor 8mm ones from HillPower. Dont know the exact price but think its below £50

As for the brake pads, get some Kevlar ones from K-Tec. Theyre just under £30 for a pair.

have a look at the coolant temp sensor.they are prone to being corroded away from the side that sits in the coolant.if thats ok id try a second hand throttle body(the potentiometer + idle moter are on it and not avaliable separatly from renault).

It that the bit that also has the screw adjustment bit for the throttle position. Sorry, Im not very technically minded. My mate whos a very good mechanic sorted my bad running out (keep reving low when cold) by adjusting this, but after a few weeks it gradually went back to how it was.

He said it might be worn inside or something and moving. Would a new throttle body cure this? How much are they new? Id try a 2nd hand one but a lot of people seem to have this problem so Id rather get a new one if it fixed it.

Sorry for all the questions, but you sound like you know your onions!

i think on your 16v the potentiometer(red unit attached to throtle body) and the idle valve(a small cylinder shaped unit in a bracket on the throttle body with 2 rubber pipes of it) are avaliable separatly.the idle valve is probably about a £100.any screws on the throttle body are preset at production and shouldnt be adjusted.all your doing by turning the screws is opening the throttle slightly more which is just masking the actual problem.we did used to change quite a few idle valves when 16v used to come in a lot.dont see that many now because nobody wants to pay dealer labour rates on an old car, which i dont blame them.i get a fair bit of dealer discount if your anywhere near the chesterfield area.

Im in North Wales mate.

Ive had a new ISCV, which helped a bit, but didnt cure it.

It did go into Renault at one point but I dont think they knew what they were doing. The guy just adjusted the potentiometer and had it idling about 1200rpm.

where can I get the temp sensor from and throttle bodies and how much should they cost? Im heading down to a renault breakers this wknd to pick up some valver calipers and discs, should they have any?

P.S how easy are the calipers and discs to fit Jay?

Cheers Danny.

A new throttle body is around £160 so a second hand one should be a lot cheaper than that.Make sure they give you a throttle body of a 1.4 single point injection energy engine. You could get a new temp sensor from any decent moter factors cheap enough.Any renault breakers should have loads of 1.4 clio bits.Front calipers and discs etc are dead easy.you need 8,14,17 and 18 spanners~13,18 and 19 sockets~decent ratchet and breaker bar~40(maybe 30)torx socket~11 brake pipe spanner~big grips~hammer~flat blade screwdrivers.Make sure you clean up and grease the pad carrier(where the pads sit).you will also need to bleed your front brakes.
