Engine rattle, water pump? Vid inside

I've noticed on idle a rattle, metallic sounding and happens every few beats of the engine idling, belts where replaced about a year and a half ago, have covered roughly 15k since then, dephaser was changed at the same time.

Does this sound like the water pump?

Gearbox is already on the way out, didn't need this :dapprove:

Hope its just something loose?

Cant really tell of the video but its the usual , most likely guessing , id get it to your local specialist ASAP mate !

Its more noticeable through the drivers front wheel, so I was thinking water pump as that's closest to that area?

I know the 1.2's suffer from water pump failures, but do the sports? I've read a few times failures aren't as common but I might be wrong. I need to get the car in the air and inspect I guess.

It sounds like that area and could be a few things , it sounds like a belt driven noise ie a resprical noise , but without hearing it in person or seeing the engine I'm personally p*ssing in the wind so to speak , I could guess but that's useless and will just make you worry lol

get it to a specialist and see what the can unearth !

Home checks you can do is pop the bonnet and have a look at the aux belt , check condition obviously if its knackered it's something on the belt and personally I'd not drive it till its been checked ! Could be something simple , I had a rattle on mine was driving me insane, only on idle , I checked everything twice over , turns out there's a metal sleeve on te rear lambda sensor , when I fitted the decat it was touching the heat shield causing the noise to travel up to the manifold I was hunting everywhere

Ill give it a look over myself, just wondered if anyone has experienced the same type of noise, but I do agree its very hard to tell with just a video, I think it could be an aux idler but they where all changed when the belts where done.

Worth getting the bonnet up and having a look around ! Hopefully something obvious ! Maybe a specialist will know that sound from a failing part , but it's hard to guarantee when you can hear just a noise lol !

Keep us informed , curious for you mate !

I will take it to a speciallist if I have to but Ill have to try and diagnose it myself to keep costs down, I suppose if it was the waterpump I could take the engine out, replace that and the aux belt and do the gearbox at the same time.

Yeah you could do the lot in one go , if your happy enough , it can be done in situe but considering the repairs might make it easier to just get the lot out !

Check the two sprung bolts on the manifold to exhaust join, mine made tinkling noises and drove me f***ing nuts

Mine is making exactly the same noise. Like wise had the belts and pulley done around 11k ago.

Have you found the problem yet?

Is the the water pump?

Cheers

I haven't inspected it yet mate, It doesn't make the noise from cold when left to tick over for a bit (so far) only after a long drive, im going to take the under tray off and have a look, im hoping its a heat shield or something easy to fix, will update the thread when I find out.

Do you mind keeping me update with the issue?

Took mine to a garage today and they said the water pump. I decided to pick the car back up, as I wasn't to sure as it was changed 15months ago.

I will keep it updated yeah.

How much have you been quoted for the water pump change?

Or anyone know how much with a new aux belt? idlers and tensioner has been changed.

Pennies.

Aux belt kit is only £60 or so for the parts.

Well thats half good news cheers budgie, the gearbox still needs a refurb.

Dont want to but how hard would it be to do myself if I took the engine out to change the water pump and belt, then seperating the box for refurb would be easier.

£380 for the refurb? That including couriers?

I wouldn't bother taking the engine out if you have no crane. Remove the gearbox, then while that's out, move the engine over enough to give you space to do the aux belt.

I didn't realise how expensive cranes are.

My girlfriend was going to drive me down there with the box in the boot, 2.5 hours there, I don't know how it works but I was hoping if I phoned in advanced I could leave it there for a few hours and collect it after it had been done, then was going to drive it home. That or stay at the girlfriends uni house and collect it on the way home.

And I was using that price as a rough guide, and yeah excluding couriers. Although do you know how much they would charge to send the box back If i couriered it to them?

Ok thats a good Idea, I need to order the clutch up then get the water pump and aux belt.

If i cut the old one off, how does the new one get tensioned on? I've seen the jubilee trick and some type of tool?

You taking the box to Agency? If so, that seems like the top money he'd charge.. I'd budget £250. He doesn't charge to send back- you book the courier both ways iirc.

If you've got enough space, no need for the tensioner tool.

3/8 extension and a ratchet/bar works just fine.

Saying that though, that's replacing the whole aux kit(which for the sake of £60, I'd do) but that's just me.

Yeah, sorry forgot to say, if it all goes to plan yep, and thats decent if its around that, have been meaning to give him a call, the courier idea is starting to sound tempting.

Ok I'll have a think about it, may replace the whole kit. Should I avoid the waterpumps on Euro car parts and stick to genuine? any Idea on how much the pump is?

Thanks.

cant make my mind up water pumps are good but i did replace one last week and the bearings were shot.
your video was to close to the car.

I've had another listen tonight, its quite noticeable above engine tick over, I've had a look with a torch and I cant seem to find anything else other than thinking its the water pump.

I think I might have to get a garage to do the job for me ignoring the whole doing the job whilst the gearbox is out thing. I don't want to risk the bearings collapsing with the possibility of it taking out the cam belt with it.

Any rough guesses on price?, Im hoping 150 ish?

Anyone ? Can I gain enough access to do the belt and pump just by jacking the sumo up and removing the engine mounts to slide it over a bit ?

I'm not going to change the whole aux kit the kit was fitted a year and a bit ago, need the worry out the way.

Sorry to sound harsh but you are stupid not to change the whole kit for the sake of £50!!!

My waterpump failed 2 months after the belts were done. I stuck a whole new kit on it.

Fair enough Martin but looking at a guide where someone changed the cambelt and aux, the changing of whole kit looked quite a lot of work, where as I know the idlers where changed not too long ago an I want the worry gone for now.

I might get the whole kit anyway, I just need to know what's the best way to gain enough access to be able to do the job. I will re read the guide I read when I'm not on my phone.

Whats the procedure for getting the new belt on please ?

This picture shows how the tensioner works

And the belt route.

Thanks Budgie, what is the best way to shift the engine over? If i remove the engine mount and support the sump, what else do I need to remove to shift the engine over?

Does that plastic lower cam cover need to be removed? looks like there is a bolt over the pump.

And lastly is the jubile clip around the tensioner sping the bodge way to get the belt tensioned?

Thanks martin, just had a listen again, I cant be sure at the moment, from the video im wondering if its the engine itself, I've just had a quote from a garage, 4.5hr labour, coolant, pump and aux kit, circa £400.

So I think Ill be ordering a pump, type-d and the aux kit and do it myself.

Have a price for aux kit, coolant, and thermostat gasket (coolant change at the same time) no water pumps available at the mo so will get the £35 one from Euro car parts (or anywhere else better?)

Read through this guide: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?437872-Cambelt-Auxbelt-Dephaser-Pulley-Guide

I understand everything bar the tensioning part, what is the home made tool for if the spring is already compressed? Not sure how i will go about making my own version :S

If I get all the parts, is anyone willing to help me for petrol and beer money? I can get the boring stuff (bumper off, wheel off, slam panel etc etc) done before arrival so its just the water pump change and belt fitting to do.

3/8" is correct after more searching, can someone give me a link to a tool that will fit or will I need to make my own?

I was thinking a tyre lever, with a 3/8 cut out and just slot a 3/8 bit through it.

Couldn't you try the Jubilee clip method for the tensioner? Bit pikey but it works from what I've read on here.

As for the waterpump, it's a bit more fiddly than you'd imagine due to those etorx bolts holding it on, also make sure you clean all of the old gasket off before fitting the new gasket/waterpump. I fitted mine in the dark and didn't get all the old gasket off, needless to say coolant pissed out of it everywhere lol
