Engine mount?

How do you know if you need new engine mounts.Ive had my 172 from new,and whenever I am booting it in 1st I get a really hard knocking noise as if something connected to the steering and wheels is loose.It can sometimes happen in 2nd gear but only when Im booting it over a bad surface of road.

Can anyone tell me what they thinks wrong?

design fault. Has it had the top mount modification yet?

if not, take it to a dealer, they'll grind some metal away - should help the noise.
