Engine idle with no alternator

  Clio 172, BMW 330ci
So my alternator recently packed up and whilst I was waiting to get the new alternator I drove the car for a few days. I just charged the battery to make sure I had enough juice! I noticed that the car seemed to idle higher without the 14v from the alternator.

Now I've fitted the new alternator today the idle has dropped back below 1000rpm whereas without a working alt it seemed to be at 1000rpm.

Am I going mad or is there a genuine reason for this?

I also noticed I'm missing the tensioner on a cup alternator setup. I just pulled the alternator up and did the bottom bolt up, belt is nice and tight. So do I definitely need the tensioner?

Thanks!
