E21 Alternator Question

Okay, sorry this isn't Clio related but I've recently had an issue with my alternator in as much as it failed!

I've fitted a replacemnt (not brand new) one tonight and the multimeter is showing 13.3v on the back of the alternator.

Obviously it should be 14-14.5v, so does anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking a bad earth? The alt is earthed via the engine, so possibly a weak engine earth?

I was under the impression that above 13v is still okay but IDEALLY it should be ~14v. Just a sign of an older alternator I'd have thought. Still working correctly but not at it's optimum.

I was told in collage, between 13.5 and 14.4 thats what iv always gone by but anything over 13volts should be fine
