dual core or single core

  golf r32
right i finally decided to build myself a pc instead of going for the ready built option and therefore saving some cash.. the problem is whether to go for the dual or single core processor ??, im looking at getting either amd 64 4000+ or 4400 dual core also ive seen some amd opteron146 (spelling) that seems to be as fast as an fx57 without overcooking. any thoughts??? .

cheers for any help

At present the FX57 looks the faster chip, but as more and more apps support dual cores the X2 range will show how good they are.

The new FX60 is dual core, so AMD are moving towards dual core in their high performance chips, with quad cores not far off.

We've got loads of PCs here with X2 4800s and they fly. We've also go a few FX57s and one FX60 which both benchmark higher and do runs games better, but that's only as very few games can take advantave of dual core. Some games actually run worse on dual core chips, but that's easily fixed by disabling the second core in task manager for that particular app or starting up windows a change to the boot.ini file. /numproc=1 /NoExecute=AlwaysOFF

The FX60 is the nuts, but it's f**king expensive....very expensive.
