Driving in France?

  Clio 172 Cup
Im going on holiday in france at the end of july, just wondering if i need those light deflectors (the ones you stick on the lense) on my ph1 172?

i have "gb" number plates so i dont need a sticker, other than that is it just a warning triangle, first aid kit, and spare bulb kit and im all good?

Thanks, thats what i wanted to hear. might buy some to keep in the glovebox just incase the french police get a bit worked up!

i know the speed limits 130kph in the dry, but how fast can you get away with? you know like the motorways 70mph but everyone seems to do 80-85? got a 10 hour drive, wouldnt mind making good time!

130 kph or as fast as you want. As long as you don't get caught obviously :)

iirc if you get caught speeding you only have to pay a fine - no way of getting points on your liscence?

***BE CAREFUL***

The french roz hang out under the bridges with the old radar type gun things saw a few on my trip. TBH you don't feel the need to go faster than 80 and its nice and legal ;) (The toll road A16 IIRC)

  Lots of Alfas
You can buy stickers from halfords that tell you where to stick them on a mk2ph1 with dual optics. However there is no need. On 172mk1s theres a little slider on the back of the light unit that swithces them from rhd to lhd. IIRC the slider is hidden behind one of the rubber boots that stop moisture getting into them.

  not a clio anymore
yellow vest and triangle are mandatory (the triangle starts this summer)
It used to be ok to drive up to 145Km/h but the police is getting quite strict. Remember to take it easy from 10Km before the tolls. They use radar, hand radars, unmarked cars parked on the side of the motorway, I have seen one driving once. THey hide behing concrete walls too.
If you have pollution advice (I had that going skiing) they reduce the speed limit and I have seen them checking it.
In the rain the speed limit is down to 110Km/h
Also note that the fixed radars are usually well marked, but one sign does not mean 1 radar. I have seen 2 fixed radars within 2 km in the southe of France.
Overall, the best bet is to stick to the speed limit.
The French people used to drive quite fast on the motorway. Since Sarko was interior minister they cracked down big time and now the French citizen are very obidient.
Other point to mention is that if you get caught, you will get a fixed penalty. If you can't pay on the spot, they will seize your car.
Have a good holiday! ;-)

I'm sure in France you can get an instant ban now if you go too far over the speed limit. Happened to an Evo road tester a while back. I think the ban was two days - luckily he had a passenger to complete the trip through France. From Le Mans goers I also hear they have a tendancy to smash radar detectors if they find them.

I went to lemans last year didnt have any problems with the police.Watch out for the strange looking speed cameras with yellow and black tape round them there even in the middle of the motorways by the central barrier! Dont think u can get caught tho!:rasp:

went to le mans this year and my mate in his 330 wasnt going any less than 110mph all the way. i told him to slow up in case of plod, but he was having none of it.

I got caught speeding in France near Nantes on sunday morning. Was tanking it along as I was late for the ferry and still a good 8 hours away from Calais. I set off 3 speed cameras that morning, in france you can pretty much ignore them if you have english plates as they never pursue them. I was doing 140kph which is 80mph on a dual carriage way , its not fast but you stick out like a sore thumb as the french drive really slowly.

Suddenly this blue VW Van joins the slip way in my rear view mirror with lights flashing, it takes it ages to catch up to me depsite me slowing to legal speed. a few minutes later i expect it to shoot past me but it gets level and points me in.

Had to stop at the next hard shoulder. They couldnt speak english. They did a lot of pointing at the 138kph on the speed gun then smiling at me. I thought at first they were letting me off but when i went to get back in the car they grabbed my elbow and escorted me to their van. GF didnt know what was happening, thought i was going to jail. They wrote 90euros on a piece of paper, so got the wallet out, S*** , ive only got 84.55 on me. They closed the van door and started driving, thought we were going to the police station but they stopped at a cash point. Got the cash paid them, then they drove me back to my car.

Even though i got caught its only a small price to pay for the excellent roads France has.

Went to paris last year and i don't think i saw one single car that wasn't dented in some way. I even saw a car actually nudging a parked car out the way so it could park in a space, i couldn't believe it...pretty much the same in Rome aswell. I would never drive my own car in either country.

Watch out for these signs, i was totally oblivious to these signs till i saw a speed camera and put two and two together!! you see them about half a mile before speed cameras on the motorway

thanks for all the replies. will have a look for the adjusters to switch my lights to left hand drive.

the advise is greatly appreciated, ill just do as i do in this country... drive with the flow of traffic and always be behind someone, then if they slam the brakes on you know theres a speed camera.

is my ROAD ANGEL legal, its a compact, uses GPS but it also has the laser attachment.
