DIY stereo controls to aftermarket HU?>

Any one tried/succeeded is making up an adapter to make the steering wheel controls work on a headunit without buying a premade kit? I'm a tight get so cant be arsed to pay £25 for an adapter if its something that I can knock up with a a few wires and soldering iron.
HU is alpine BTW.

its not. Its a can bus signal, so unless you interested in decoding the can buss commands, best to just buy an adapter! Also you HU will have a specific input signal (they are not all the same).
