... solved!
was pootling around the other day in my 172, and there was a faint knocking/tapping/rattling.
it was driving me mad. (i'm like that).
anyway, stopped car and thumped the dash til i could hear the rattle.
it was the wires behind the blanking plate. (console illumination traction etc) in front of driver's right knee. they'd become detached.
all better now!
