Damned if I do damned if I dont? advice...

  Cupped 182 with Milltek
Cambelt failed recently, car currently at garage awaiting opportunity for inspection of damage, suspect its going to need a new cylinder head assembly. I intend to trade the car in after it's repaired, but here is the question! it's going to cost around £1800 to repair (new head from Ktec along with cambelt kit, aux kit and fitting etc). The car is a one owner 64k mile,2005 full fat 182, milltek cat back exhaust.is it worth me having it repaired and trade it in or just sell it as it is? what would it be worth as is?
Whatever happens, the car will be going, I also have a set of anthracite superturinis, an rs tuner, a milltek decat and a still boxed Ktec carbon front splitter that will be for sale(one also fitted to the car).

mods. I will stick the stuff in the for sale section when it goes on sale, I am currently in China until mid august. really just testing the water -repair and trade or not repair and sell?

As above. If you trade in as it is, it'll be seriously reduced in value, even with all the bits on it. If you have an emotional attachment to the car, then repair it.

£1800 is bloody expensive IMO for the aforementioned job.

i would brake but if you dont want to i would just buy a cheap second hand engine, they go for f#ck all and either have a go at fitting yourself or get a local garage to fit it.

the parts are the expensive bits, labour is reasonable, garage looked at prices and also the viability of getting a local machine shop to repair the head, but then figured that the time taken to strip and replace valves, seats cams etc, machine any damage the KTec price of £836 for a complete replacement was not a bad price and far less than others they have done. The few mods done will make no odds to market value, and there is no way I can see any dealer taking the car as a trade in as is. I just wondered if I am better selling privately as is or paying for the repair and trading in?

  172 cup
I got quote for my old 172 from another specialist to supply a new engine, with new dephaser etc, gearbox, new clutch and fitting and it was less than 1800!

liking that, FYI it's a local garage and not Ktec that are doing the work, always used these guys very good and reasonable pricing, so much so that I know when I am overseas my wife can pop in have things checked, frequently free of charge, well respected small garage.
The chaps been too busy to have a look yet and as the Clio was a 2nd car it's no rush, once the heads been off and we can really find out the damage can better assess the future, but reckoning is as stated above, he was off the opinion that ktecs pricing of the head was very good and preferred to him stripping, having machined and rebuild the old head. Thanks for advice though, all much appreciated. Plan is to get rid of clio and get a mk3 mx5 2.0 (yes yes I hear the hairdresser comments already!) . but would I get better value trading in a runner or sell as is? even looking at the ebay plan its still likely to be the best part of £1k to get going and thats a k i could spend on the other car- only wanting to spend £6-7k on the mazda, its still only going to be a second car and not used for best part of 6 months a year.

Sounds expensive to me. What headwork will be required? You might get away with a set of new valves only, which to be fair isn't a huge job when you've already got the head off.

I'd be asking for cheaper alternatives than sticking a new head on it, that's total overkill in IMO.

Failing that, i'll come and collect it for £300!

once the head comes off we will have a proper idea, lads on holiday until the 22nd and been too busy to start the clio, once we see whats what, then I will decide. but I don't see much point spending £1800 to max return get my money back in the trade in.Will need to wait and see.£300, nice try :) I still have my sense of humour. you can have the Super Turinis for a wee bit more though!(plus courier)

£1800!!! My 182 suffered engine failure, had engine replaced, all the belts done and stuck in a new clutch for good measure for about 1k. That was at a specialist, only one thing special about KTec ;) just sell the car as it i.... Breaking a car is a long drawn out process.

I wouldn't even contemplate breaking it. You would be stupid to sell as is as too. A low mileage 2005 182 surely warrants spending £500 to £1000 absolute max on (2nd hand engine, timing belt kit, aux belt if it needs it and labour) if its getting traded in straight away, don't replace the clutch to save costs and I doubt it's needing one anyway.

Also pull of the extra bits you have added (if you kept the originals) and recoup even more cash.
