Dad's new Focus RS

4 wheel drive will always have the edge.....end of. Ford cant change physics no matter how clever they are. I can't see why ford went to such lengths and money to produce a beautiful handling fwd car when they could have just spent half the time and money on a four wheel drive system to produce what could have been an epic handling car i.e Skyline GTIR, Evo handling standards.

Dont they piss all over Evos on the handling front?

4WD systems are heavy, add that to an already beefy car and its not going to be as special imo!

Plus, that Revo Knuckle system is supposed to be damn good as it stands. Ford make good fast hatches, this is no exception to the rule :)

Roll back 25 years ago and thats exactly the same sort of thing Ford were saying when Audi introduced the Quattro to the rally stages to compete against the much lighter 2wd 200+bhp Escort..........now the same thing is being said again because Ford have knocked out a lovely handling motor! lmao:lolup:
Im not arguing the fact they cant make a fine handling car just that 4 wheel drive will ALWAYS be better. No matter how fancy the suspension geometry, how trick the diff or traction control system is, there's always twice the grip in a 4wd car. As for the weight issue, thats rubbish. Modern 4 wheel drive systems with transverse engines dont weigh a great deal more than fwd's. Just a prop, 2 drive shafts and an alloy rear diff. (I think volvo added 70kg to the S60/V70 with the Haldex 4wd system) If the weight was an issue, they could have simply added another 25-50 bhp to compensate for it.

on as.net an s3 owner with a well sorted car (revo stage2,miltek,hpfp,h and springs, arbs) comented on how a dc2 was quicker round the track.

4wd DOES cost and weigh more so somewhere along the way you pay the price,weather it be in £,weight or performance.

There is a case for both

Your dead right if your concerning pretty standard fwd cars on a dry track and dry roads for that matter. How many of us keep our cars standard though???? Especially turbocharged where huge gains are possible. Do you reckon the Escort and Sierra Cosworths would have been such iconic cars if they were fwd? Its about time Ford grows some balls and produce a no compromised hot hatch like they did with the escort cosworth. Imagine driving an RS to the 'ring and discovering its a damp, greasy track. "Oh sh1t, won't be going flat around this today!" you'll think to yourself. On the over hand in an evo it'll be "might get some nice drifts today.....bring it on!" I know what i'd rather be in but thats just my opinion.

Its about time Ford grows some balls and produce a no compromised hot hatch like they did with the escort cosworth.

The world has changed a lot since 1992 and given the financial state FMC are in; could they really afford to take any risks?

They didn't even need to design the 4 wheel drive system as its already in use so that wouldn't have cost the earth. The same as the "new" 5 cylinder engine they now use which has been around since the 1992 volvo 850. As for the risk, honestly, If you had the option to have the RS in fwd or 4wd, what would you take???.....no brainer really, so where would the risk have come from?

The risk is clear when you read through the interviews with Jost Capito. They built a 4WD mule which they didn't think was very good.

If you release a product that even you don't believe in; you're taking a fair chance!

I'm not hating on 4WD - i've been there (and i'm still there) and I believe in it. The RS (like the R26.R) is a exceptional FWD car though let's not lose sight of that. Is better to have produced a great FWD car than a run of the mill 4WD one?

Transplanting bits from others cars isn't guaranteeing a perfect outcome.

Yeah I suppose your right in that fact mate. The car is definatly an excellent car with out a shadow of a doubt as it does everything you want it to. I just find it a shame they haven't made something brutal and menacing to take on the typical high powered Japs and other super quick track cars like they used to. If the same people were running it now, I'm sure they'd be aiming at the FQ 360/400's or even Vspecs. RS 500's, RS2000's, Cosworth Escorts and Sierras.....all iconic, mental cars which I'm sure more than a few School boys have had pinned to their bedroom walls, no doubt all powersliding sideways. Just a pitty the new RS cant do that.

Evo said dont buy an evo until you've driven the focus,The focus is much better value for money

If you would rather an evo or an impreza over this there is clearly something wrong with your head... RS' will always be more than just great cars imo.

I'm sure every member of the motoring journos out there would take an FRS over any evo or impreza.

I wouldnt dismiss an evo or impreza so quickly, whilst cars like the focus rs, r26r have there place on the roads and for 80% of the time (certainly in the uk) cars like the evo are hard to beat point to point.

Journalists arent the be all and end all, there just humans with an opinon

Okay, I actually like evos and imprezas.

When you attach an RS badge to a ford I go all weak at the knees tho.

its a shame most of the engine is covered by plastic. Was reading the ford autoteam today explaing alot about its technical bits and the revo knuckle, very interesting if your into that sort of thing, but had lovely photos.
We had a boy come in the other day there with one, not officially come in but went round the back to speak to the technicians with his White RS. was running rough and rattling in gear. basically he blew up the engine and knackered the box racing an m5 or m3 canny mind which, engine was no where near run in, only had a it a week or two now its fuct, and he's too afraid to take it in to a ford garage to try a warranty claim becuase of the bill he'd be presented with. The car he had before it was a 1.4 st replica with 20 inch wheels- bit of a change there since it had show and go but now the 1.4 is probably quicker.

i just need to fill out the quiz i need to do to prove ive read it and send the test sheet back to ford. and has a wee bit of info on the mountune fiesta kit, like you know how they bang on about oh mountune keeps your warranty, err wrong, you only get a 12 month 12k mile warranty on the kit.

The RS sounds pretty nice, but doesnt really sound that much different to my old mans ST. If i owned the RS i would have to get it decatted. A guy i know from work has a 310 bhp Decatted ST and it sound really good. actually pops and bangs and spits flames. Not everyones cut of tea tho :)
