Wuuuuut! They can be fixed for less than a grand if the mech unit fails? You know this Dave.
A friend's V6 TT dsg went a few years back, cost him less than a grand to fix and did another 40k before selling for a mk2.

Seems that ECU testing couldnt do the later mechatronics when i had mine though (i enquired after some clunking), mk1 TT fine, later units not so much. More the mechanical side of things that causes the problems though, unless you can find a DSG specialist, which arent exactly in every town.

Slight update on this. I've dropped the budget to £8k and moved away from the r32 idea. In truth, the head has overruled the heart and I need space, comfort and toys. The Mrs will hardly be driving it at all, so I'm back between these two. Votes please;

Missed the Audi, had a look and it is in. Ideally 2.7tdi.

I'm not getting some pricey big engine job though. I have one needy car already.

Don't get the 2.7, get the 3.0. More power, same mpg.
They are very reliable and respond well to a map if needed.

Can get a nice C6 quattro for your budget ( yes you need quattro)

I don't mind a 3.0 - especially if it has the same MPG. I'm just not going to get a 4.2 lol!

They hold up well to mileage? I don't mind high milers, if well looked after. But i'll need to put another 60k on it over say 3-4 years. You still got to yours?

The 3.0 is used on nearly every platform between VAG cars and are good for over 200k if looked after. I would be looking for a 60k-90k model if you're doing that much. (just for resale).

Get one thats got full Audi history, not much to check on apart from the usual dull VAG diesel crap. Ideal spec is colour nav/full MMI, keyless start/entry, bluetooth, xenons, s-line, heated seats.

Le mans is considered a 'limited edition' etc but its b****cks BUT this one is the nuts..

So, an update to this. I'm testing this out over the Christmas break, with a view to buying it in Jan after it's been serviced at a BMW main dealer.

It has FBMWSH and extended warranty from the dealer (although that is non-transferable, hence it getting serviced by the old owner in Jan). 103k, 330i SE, fully loaded with sat nav etc. only thing missing seems to be heated seats.

Yes, it is not an estate and yes it won't be brilliant on fuel, but for the price I'm being offered it seems a no brainer. Thoughts please...

Volvo v50 then maybe? Just as practical but a bit more compact. I've got a v70, drive like a bellend and I still get 47mpg.. Only thing that ever seems to go wrong with it is boost hoses popping off (3 in 15 months). Comfy all day long, we did 560 miles to Portsmouth and back the other day, my friend who came with me said it didn't feel like we'll done many miles. Lots of toys as well, heated seats, air vents in rear for passengers, cruise control, climate control, tcs, loads of boot space, rear parking sensors on most of them and pretty cheap parts. Defo worth a look/test drive

If it's for around the price you told me the other day, I don't know why you haven't bought it already! Looks lush, I'd prefer the current owner's new car though, obviously.

My dad has owned one of these from new, Issues he has had include hydraulic fluid getting onto the clutch which caused it to slip, the passenger door lock mechanism going, a squeaky steering wheel and the gear stick needed replacing due to wear. All the other issues he had were down to the 2.0tdi lump, mainly turbos. Oh and the run flats are horrible...

As for the wheels, BMW 162 Ellipsoids are some of my fav oem wheels! lol
