coilovers... someone help??!!

I am pretty naive when it comes to coilovers. Can someone please explain to me how they work, what suspension on clio's they can be used with, the benefits of coilovers, the best makes, price range, the requirements etc.

Really fancying a set for my mk2 ph2 1.6 dynamique but would love to know your thoughts, inputs and views on them for clios.
