Clio 16v

  clio172
Hi all-

I am new to the boards so go easy :)
I had a 172 and sold it about year ago to buy an M3 and now considering going back to the clio. I hope to go have a look at a 16v the weekend. I did a search as im looking for info about what I should be looking out for, if I purchase it but the search option brought back 'page can not be displayed'
Any info will be appreciate :)

you've gotta keep your eyes open for quite a lot with these things! First thing is to look for a FULL service history and a lot of receipts for work done. Most of these cars are on high miles now, its worth spending the money and a minter with low mileage, becuase a higher mileage car will cost you all sorts in maintenance.

Make sure that any car has had its cambelt changed around the 70k mark, as this is one of the most expensive thing to have done as its an engine out job, and also because it will cause endless amounts of damage if it snaps! Check that its had driveshafts replaced also as these are another expensive repair and are quite common faults on 16v's. Engine mounts are another common fault with the engine being so big and heavy, the mounts themselves are cheap enough but again its an engine out job to replace them.

bit of a warning for you though, i bought one of these things a few years ago, bought a minter but had high miles (100k) for £3000, but in an 18 month period i spent over £3000 again in repairs.

They are wicked cars though, and if you keep your wits about you, and take your time to find a mint example with full service history, and maintanance record, then theres no reason that you shouldn't have hassle free motoring :)

also worth noting that some clio williams' are available for maybe £1k-1.5k more than a 16v and most are maintained to a higher standard than 16v's with them being a limited edition iconic car!

hope this helps, please pm me if you have any questions as ive got a fair bit of experience with these cars :)

I had a N reg in vgc, with low millage(50k) fsh for about 18 months, great car. I had no hassel with it at all, very reliable car didn't spend anything on repairs apart from tyres.

The only bad points where; the sunroof leeked like a b**ch, alot of them do they are crap, ask the seller about it and have a look for signs of damp etc.

Also check the 3 oil guages work, one of mine didn't and it can be expensive to get them working, but they're not the end of the world.

Check for crash damage, mine was very twitchy in the wet! Can catch you out.

They all seem to rust on the rear arches, check for signs of filler, will soon rust through again.

I owned a mint (and I mean mint) standard example for three years (sold it last july) no real issues with it at all tbh, in that time it needed a new clutch, plus servicing - nothing major, apart from
It ended up being on about 90k but the oil pressure pump let go on it  So it basically totalled the engine ! So I got another one fitted on 60k, this apparently is very rare (total job was about £600 in getting the cambelt done)
Other than that it was a great car.

Despite what people say, the cambelt change isn't an engine out job, most places will just drop the subframe & do it.

Apart from the usual, check the rear arches as they rust, they rust from the inside outwards.

Get one with loads of history & bills with it, also look out for one thats been thrashed to death, if it has i'd walk away tbh.
another thing - don't put castrol gtx magnatec in it, as they hate it, the car will sound like a tractor when cold:(
