Car cut out now displays battery warning light.

I was driving along when the engine cut out. I coasted and pulled up. Now the battery warning light on the dash is illuminated and the car won't start. It will turn over.

Any suggestions?

It is a Phase 1 Clio 172 if that makes any difference.

Have you tried a new battery? Could possibly be a new alternator

I haven't,It is currently stuck at the side of the road. It cut out suddenly about 1 mile up the road from where I started

Any symptoms before it slowed

My battery light came on the other day. Alternator was fried, smoking like a nut. Jump start it. Let it run connected for a bit. Take off the leads and test the voltage over the battery. If it's just 12v the alternator is dead. I'd expect closer to 14v if the alternator is working.
