Can the Dephaser be replaced with standard pulley?

Hi,

This is a post out of interest more than needing it at the moment! But didn't some variants of the Clio 172 / 182 engine when installed in other cars and vans do without the dephaser pulley?

As it's alleged the dephaser is for emissions only, is there any reason why this could not be replaced with a standard pulley?

The MK2 Megane Sports don't have a dephaser pulley.

It's probably a bit more complicated than just removing it i'd imagine.

The camshaft has an oil feed down it with a drilling at the end which will need to be blocked off or fit a set of non vet cat cams while you're in there
