Can the AC pump turn on with no system pressure

Now the summer is on the way I want to get the A/C on the DCI sorted. At the moment the system has no pressure but when I hit the A/C button on the climate control the pump doesn't kick in. Is this because there is no pressure in the system? I don't want to get the system pressured up and then find that the compressor is dead.

Is there a simple way to test the compressor. I'm sure I can work this all out but just wanted to hear peoples ideas first.

Cheers

Yes ! there is a pressure sensor in the system which will stop the compressor running if its low / empty.
It is quite unlikely the compressor is knackered as the oil in the system usually collects there.
take it to an air con specialist and they will vac it down to see if theres a leak before attempting to re-fill it.
