Can i only change the dephaser? or a whole timing job's needed?

  Clio 172 RS ph1
Hi, a year ago i changed the timing belt and tensioner on my ph1, but being an Idiot i neglected the dephaser.
no the car is "dieselish" at low rpm - and i think the dephaser's life is coming to an end.
Can the dephaser be changed on it's own? do you need the locking tools? is it a full on timing job?

Cheers

You cant no.

Its a full cambelt kit job again.

I feel your pain mate.

I had mine done, then did it again a year later to have cams fitted due to a camshaft being busted.

any idea how much do the genuine locking tools cost?
thinking of doing it my self...

Have you done it before?

The tools come up on here periodically for about £100-£120.

For the part price and hassle of acquiring the tools, you're likely to save yourself less than £100/200.

With all due respect, if you're asking if you can just change the dephaser on its own or not, leads me to say a belt change and getting the timing right may be a bridge too far.....

I'd take it to one of the specialists on here. For the extra £100 it's worth it for the piece of mind / lack of hassle.

Hi Cub,
i'm not in the uk (and not in europe), and it'll cost quite a bit more.
so yeah i'm asking. You are right that i lack experience, but i have done almost everything on my own so far and havent caused too much damage, it is my first car (had bikes before).
Anyways, i believe that if i follow the guide and have the right tools i'll be fine - but when you say that the price of the tools is 100 pounds, i think i'll pass. and just order the parts from ebay and let a proffesional do the work.

The belt itself etc doesn't cost too much. Can't the garage just order it all in for you? Can't see yourself saving much money buying the parts yourself, that is all.

Make sure any garage you go to have the crrwct tools to time it.
if they use tipex then you can tell them to jog on

I do pretty much most things on mine. Except the belts. They aren't' the easiest of jobs and if you get it wrong it is more than a little frustrating.

Being abroad does complicate things though. Sadly, even with the correct tools and the guide, it isn't easy to do. Else we'd all be buying the tools and doing it.

Thanks diagro, i'll make sure.
Typhoon- u won't belive the prices here.
Just a quick example:
Pair of genuine front shocks for the ph1: 600 pounds.
Crankshaft pulley: 300 pounds.
List goes on...

Buying it in the uk and shipping oversees will cost me roughly half of what it would cost here.

I believe there are now aftermarket tools to replace all of the Renault ones now. I havent used them myself as I have a genuine set, but they look as good to be honest. . Adam at Renault Wolverhampton is a good contact for you as he can arrange postage on parts +441902 439264

got a microtech cam locking set with all the bits for 700 bucks ( 33 pounds and some odd) worked just fine, cambelt is easy to do, space is limited though so a magnet on a stick is a handy tool to have, follow the guides if your unsure how to do it and you will be fine. just make sure to give the crank a good many turns by hand to make sure nothing is hitting before you fire it up for the first time.

sorry for the mix up, a garage changed the belt, not me personally.
da rok, thanks, i'll look in to it.

alright, it is time for money to go to the bin - i'm gonna order parts and let a garage that i trust do the work.
i did a full timing job (except for the dephaser) about a year ago, so water pump is new, also - aux belt and tensioner have been just replaced recently.
can anyone help me with a parts list? (part numbers will be helpfull too, but i can get that on my own - there's a russian site with all the explosion charts).
so far i know that i need the dephaser pulley and a new cambelt - what else?

thanks.

I personally would reuse the idler and tensioner as they are only a year old. So that leaves you needing timing belt, dephaser, camshaft end caps, top pulley bolts, bottom pulley bolt.

I'm sure others will be along shortly with a more comprehensive list, that's just what I can think of off the top of my head.
