Sorry if i say names etc wron but i havent really a clue about cars as im a lady :rasp:

Went to view a car last night, took two hours, got there and he said i couldnt test drive as its not insured or taxed, started the car and it sounded ok, had a look round and thought it was fine so paid the money. Only thing i noticed is that the acc pedal was very hard but that could just be normal, i have no idea, over half way home i opened the window and heard metal ratteling, think the exhaust has a blow!! He also advertised the car as central locking but the fob needed a new battery?... think he saw me coming, littler **** :evil:
So i have a few questions for anyone that could help please?

If the cars central locking works, would the key lock all 5 doors? Because it isnt, its just locking the drivers door. Will it work with new battery in fob?

Is the acc pedal ment to be so hard?

It also make a clonk noise when i staert the engine and he said something about having a powerful starter thingy so thats what the noise was?

Lastly, have i got a leg to stand on to take the car back and ask for a refund? I bought it from a private seller, didnt get a reciept but filled in log book etc. Ive got a feeling my dad will not be too happy with this bloke when he see's what ive bought :dapprove:

The central locking will be an electrical fault somewhere, nothing to do with the fob.
The knock will probably be worn engine mounts.
Throttle dedal being hard will need a new throttle cable or the body greasing.

And no unfortuantely you haven't really got a leg to stand on. How much did you pay?

Assuming theres nothing else wrong its not a lot of money in parts to fix the knock and the stiff pedal, central locking could be a biggie.

Central locking will lock all doors and boot on the button by the gearbox if they are closed. If your simply locking using the key then yes it will only lock that one door.

Im sure you do have some sort of 'leg to stand on' in taking the car back. If it was sold with you knowing all the problems then fine, but it wasn't. I'd take it back and ask for your money back!

I'm not trying to knock you, and so dont read this as me hurling abuse towards you (its hard to get an intended message across via the internet sometimes)..BUT....

why did you purchase it without taking it for a test drive?
Also, really you should have taken your dad along to have a second opinion.
I bought my first car in January this year and took my stepdad along.
He saw/noticed things that I would never have noticed.
For example, we went to see one Clio being sold by a guy who owned a car garage with 10-15 guys working there.
Took it out for a drive and it felt a bit weird...he blamed lack of petrol...so he said he'd give us directions to fill up. Along the way, I think he realised my stepdad knew more about cars than he first thought, so he directed us back to the garage.
Safe to say we didnt buy it.
Think about it- if it was such a minor/cheap fix then he had the man power and knowledge to fix the problem. Our guess was it was an expensive fix which doesnt make the car profitable and not worth the hassle.

Ive been in contact and said i want my money back, hes basically said: if you want perfection you should buy a brand new car with a 5 year guarantee! Cheeky bugger!! i told him the central locking didnt work and he said it didnt work when he bought it but it just needed a new battery as thats what he got told! When i mentioned the exhaust, he said again, what do you expect for £995! I wont repeat what i said
So all in all he said hes sent the log book off and that its my problem now, he will not give a refund!! guess ill have to hope and pray it wont cost alot to solve

Aside from doing as Daniel suggested, (fire + lounge) you bought it sold as seen ... either get it fixed, or eBay it and hope someone equally stupid buys it without driving it, or break it and recoup your losses !

I don't think the key will lock all the doors, I'll try on my sister's car later. Do all the doors lock with the central locking button near the gear stick? If they do, then most likely you'll just need a new battery in the remote, there could be a chance it'll need recoding - about £70 from Renault off the top of my head, not sure if a normal garage can do it.

Legally, I don't think he has to tell you what's wrong with it unless you ask. As for money back, no way unfortunately.

In legal terms theres no 'Sold as Seen' anymore, its either sold working with defects or sold as 'spares or repair'

I'm no expert, but I've been an owner for a lot of years so can at least help try to diagnose some issues and you can go from there.

Right a few things for you to do....

• Open the drivers window, lean into the car and press the lock button on the gearstick surround, do all of the doors lock??

The key in the door will not activate the central locking, it's just the way the car works. If the doors lock/unlock with that rocker button, then the CL works and it's just the key that needs seeing to. (This does mean a new battery is an entirely possible fix)

• Look under the car, where's the blow coming from?

If it's a join, there's a good chance a bit of paste and re-bolting it will fix this issue, if not, you may need a new bit of exhaust, but non sport exhausts are cheap as chips anyway, so it's no problem.

The throttle pedal is easy to check but not so easy to explain, and the knock shouldn't be too hard to figure out in person aswell.

Well i bought a car once, an regretted it as i had to then folk out an extra 700 quid sorting problems, But it was a learning curve for me, and i will never do it again. As said, central locking works with the button near the gearstick, the remote locking will need a new battery in the key

How many miles is it on as £995 for an S reg is pretty expensive, I only paid £750 for mine and thats with a full 12 months mot, tax, brand new exhaust system and also 3 months warranty.

The jobs you need doing dont sound very expensive anyway
