Cambelts gone...

My sisters 172 (bought from me) has had cambelt failure and is now, for want of a better word, fucked. THe thing is though, I had the belts done at 47k just before selling it to her, and she has only done 12k in 18 months. Surely the belts shouldn't have gone is such a short time and mileage? The car is mint apart from this, but shes not sure she can afford the £1200 price the garage have quoted. Seems a bit high to me. WOuld it be better fitting a new engine via a breakers? Should she sell it as is? Could I claim against the cambelt manufacturer?

Snap.

Excuses the pun, mine went the other day too, less than 18months ago and about 10k miles. Not been quoted that much, but still getting mine fixed.

Renault parts are only covered for 12months IIRC.

Craig, might just be worth getting a new engine in it and selling it on.

ouch, thats a bummer, belts are ment to last a lot longer than that, was it fitted properly by a renault specialist or was it shitfit? You could try claiming against the cambelt manufacturer, but its your word against theirs that it was fitted properly and hasnt been ragged around. Engine change would be my choice, do it yourself, its not as difficult as it looks.

OK, assuming I find her an engine. Is it old out, and new in or do I need to do anything with the ECU? Is there any variation in the 172 engine, i.e wiring loom?

im pretty sure as long is the same type and would share the same ecu, then it should be a straight swap, dont quote me on it though but i dont think 172's have any kind of ECU locking or anything. I swapped an engine in a Focus Zetec, 1.8 out and a 2.0 in on the 1.8 gearbox and 1.8 ECU and it runs fine, if anything a little lean. So swapping for an identical engine shouldnt make any difference. But im sure an engine geek will be along soon to confirm

Seriously?

That's utter pisch! If the orginal lasted the alloted time then the replacement should aswell! The work carried out should carry a larger guarantee than 12 months!

fred changed mine two weeks ago, he said i wouldnt even have to think about getting my belt kits replaced for another 36k or 5 years IIRC

the belts should last alot longer than 12 months easy

Unfortunately yes, and it was some dodgy company in London that changed them, so not even going to bother with them about it.

The work was done by a local BMW garage that does all my cars, and has done for ten years now. I trust them and know the work will have been to a high standard. Gonna pop in and see what they say...

Indeed, i'd rather drive all the way to Fred than leave it with some spanner monkey!

Jonesy - Your K4M is on borrowed time mate; 72k or 5yrs so you're well past due now! Get the waterpump done at the same time for piece of mind as they're the biggest killer of the belts on the 1.4/1.6 16v engines. We do them for £350 including genuine water pump, aux belt kit and timing belt kit but you can get them done for around £250 using non-genuine kits and water pumps.

There do seem to be a fair few of these snapping at the minute - If there's any doubt about yours or when it was last done, simple... get it changed!

As for your sisters car Phuzion, go back to where it was done and talk to them. Don't go in all guns blazing demanding and making accusations because that won't win you any friends.Just go in, don't phone, and talk to them. To be fair there are a few things that can go wrong which can make the timing belt run fail such as the Aux drive belt run. Was this changed at the same time? Was the job fully documented and warranted?
