it is NOT, i repeat NOT adviseable to go to a "normal" garage, seek a specialist (and i'm not just saying that because i am one, i see other garages f**k ups on a daily basis! RS cars need someone with experience and the specialist tools to do the work - FACT)

I dont hold with this 'must go to a specialist ' line of thinking. There are some exceptional independent garages that are equally good at this work and competively priced too.

Ultimately though you pay your money you take your chances.... Just be sure they have the kit and dont rely on the tipex !

At the current cost of fuel it pays to stay local if you have no specialist in your area...

^in response to that, and please bare in mind i'm as honest as they come, i couldn't care less if you use me or not, seriously i just hate seeing people getting ripped off/recieving work that is s**t, AND i recommend other specialists if i'm too busy or its too far for people to travel, but saying that i get people driving from Glasgow for minor servicing, so hey i must be not bad ;)

in 10years (and i'm NOT joking) i have seen specialist f**k ups, independant f**k ups, dealer f**k ups, basically you name it!

i'm yet to f**k up, bar the part issue recal, which all people we're informed of and are slowly being brought back for the fault to be rectified

points are as follows

1 - specialists are competitivley priced, go find an independant doing what we do for the same money - you won't
2 - we know what we're doing

same as the above ^^

ive worked at many dealers, specialists, and independants. we ALL f**k up from time to time. same as any plumber/leccy/bricky whatever. even dentists and doctors f**k up. i lost an uncle to cancer as the docs missed it.

simple answer is, find a garage that you like/happy with/trust/good prices etc etc as there are s**t fitters working at dealer level and excellent fitters working in places that are badly lit with 20 years of s**t on the floor. and vice versa.

Full cambelt kit , full accessory belt kit fitted Inc vat £450
Also I would think about changing the dephaser pulley £160ish on top of above price.

got a quote for about £300 ish, there also buying in the tool/kit needed

If I got a quote there they said we willl buy the tools needed this means your the first, that would make me abit unsure hence why people recommend specialists. People that deal with these day in day out.

Tears my view if I understood it properly.

£465 I'm paying, no point risking it for £150. I'm a complete minge bag but I'm paying full whack purely for peace of mind that I won't suddenly be landed with the £1500+ bill for a rebuild when the belts snap/slip.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Tools are around £150 iirc, cambelt kit £120 ish say, aux belt kit £100 (can't remember real prices of kits).

You must be a good mate of this mechanic, if he's giving you 4 hours of his time and taking a £70 loss mate...

Doesn't add up pal, that's all I'm saying.

closer to £130 and £150 for each of the kits, and book time is over 5 hours

Emphasises the point even more then Danny, don't you think? My prices were all approximate from memory. So to quote given, garage is giving 6 hours labour for free, and taking a loss of around £130.

yep i payed 150 for a cam belt kit bk in october.. then i found out it had been done only 8k b4 hand so i returned it bt as people have said 300 i wouldnt even take the risk of it.. straight to a specialist 4 peace of mind if you ask me

I have used the same garage since I first owned a car 10 years ago and they have always been excellent. When it came to getting the belts done, I didn't even get a quote, just went straight to a specialist on here!! Not worth the risk!

I would be exactly same mate. I use a garage I trust 110%, and would use them for everything except this. He would probably even do a bit of research and advise me to take it somewhere else.

Call him for a quote - is s#$t hot at doing these and wish I would have followed advice and gone to a specialists over a local grg - have 'issues' at present and the money I have saved is soon to be lost!!
