Buying a DSLR this evening! Nikon D60 or Canon 450D!! QUICK ADVICE PLEASE!

  Honda. Tesla Someday
Morning all!

As the thread title says... Nikon D60 or Canon 450D???

Opinions and advice please???

Thank You!!!

I was told by a few ppl to get the canon over the nikon. 1 reason was due to build quality etc

  Honda. Tesla Someday
Thank you!

Seen those cameralab videos before, been looking in to the D60 and Canon for about 2 weeks now, still can't make up my mind. Had a play with both, still unsure!!

Anyone used both of them?

  Honda. Tesla Someday
I feel comfy with both!!!!

Do you think the 450D is worth the extra money??

This is seriously doing my head in!

I had a D40, went to a 450D, then back to a D60.

But currently really enjoying using the misses Olympus E-420!

think the d40/60 are more comparable to the 1000d?

the 450d is very impressive, positioned above the d40 though imo, d40 has this silly lens thing where you have to watch which ones work, but 450 is more expensive.

450d does have a really good viewing screen, makes a lot of difference imo for viewing your shots after and also self cleans the sensor.

I always stick with Canons.. as do most of my family. I have a 300D, my Dad's is a 450D and is very nice. The uncle has a 2D but we don't talk about that ;-)

I went from the 350D to 450D and happy with the results, the big screen on the 450D is a big plus imo. Make it a lot easier to check if it's in focus when previewing pictures.

As said above the Nikon D60 is more on par with the Canon 1000D in terms of features and price.

I've currently got a 400D but have recently tried out my mates 450D and I was very impressed.

Can't help on the Nikon side of things sorry.

I think I'm going towards D60. Rather that over the D40 due to extra MP for blowing images up and inclusion of the VR lens. As said above, D40/60 are more comparable to the 1000D, 450D is a level up IMO especially price wise. Its more than I'm willing to spend so D60 wins out of D40/60/1000D for me.

I'd say if you are willing to spend up to 450D money then get it. But 500D out in May so maybe some 450D bargains to come around then?

Why from a 450D back to a D60?

Didn't like the finish of the Canon - the smooth plastic just felt cheap and the finish was a smudge magnet. Preferred the menu layouts and feel of the D60 and the entry level Nikon lenses just felt so much better built and focusing was much better.

But using neither at the moment - Olympus one I am using is superb!

bit more limited in terms of lenses if you go for the Nikon as the motor is in the lens appose to the body. Both are great camera's so you're best holding both and seeing which you like the feel of best really (not alot in it if you read the write ups/reviews).

I have the Nikon D60 and yes you do have to watch what lenses you buy, but only really if you want to retain all the features (Auto focus, VR etc).

Besides, they have quite a good selection to choose from. I am currently in the market for a 55-200mm Nikkor VR lense, gets good reviews as an entry level kit lense.

Sound advice!

Do you think the 450D price will fall when the 500D comes out?

How much do you think the 500D will retail at?

edit: just checked amazon etc and it seems the 500D will launch at about £869! Way over my budget!

  Cupra
The 500D is on another level again. It is not replacing the 450D but staring along side it I think.

You will get a split on here on what to choose so you just need to go try both again and see what one you enjoy more, try going in to the menus and try a few lenses etc.

  306 GTi-6
Try them out. If there's no specific features you require from a camera then it comes down to feel. Both will take cracking pics.

If it were my choice, I'd have the Nikon as it feels best in my hands, the Canon grip was far too thin and would be nothing but irritating on long shoots.

However, as stated above, lenses with no drive motor will not auto-focus on the D60. Not an issue if you want to be picky about which lenses you buy, but lens purchases such as the famous 50mm f/1.8 prime will not AF on the Nikon. My Nikon has drive motor on body, but tbh my 50mm prime gets very little use as 50mm on a crop body is not a very useful focal length ! (rather have 18-55mm with VR)

i went into jessops today and the dude there, an old chap that has been in photography for 30 years etc, and goes to brands hatch etc telling me about these dslr's. he advised me of another brand which is better, but i cannot remember the name of it.

he said he wouldnt recommend the canon or nikon. but he did say buy one that you are comfortable holding.

in the end i think it will be the nikon d60, also they have a special offer going on until the 16th. if you buy an additional lens with the nikon d60, that additional lens will be sold for half the price.

so i end up paying for nikon d60 and 2 lens for the same price as a canon 450d.

i will have my decision made up in a couple days, as i have money ready to buy too.

lol, can i post all the lens's which work on the canon, form canon, sigma etc. etc......

the 500d is a replacement for the 450d, but the 1000d is nearly up to 450d spec anyway so they are trying to widen the gap, plus its going up against the d90 and the price of everything camera related has gone up recently, the prices for the 500d are all RRP, the price will drop right after launch like it did on the 50d.

You can if you like, but thats not the point of my post. People were merely questioning the lenses available for the D40/D60, not what lenses fit the canon.

No bother to me, I'm not using Canon or Nikon right now!

Trying to be unbiased, but the Nikon kit lenses are generally regarded as being better than the Canon equivalents in magazine reviews etc, so if you are thinking of sticking to a fairly basic set up it's worth considering. Obviously if you plan to upgrade to new lens then it's a non issue anyhow.

On the plus side for the Canon, it does have a much wider range of lens available, and if you are considering shopping around for second-hand lens you will have far more joy picking up Canon gear that is fully compatible with the body.

I personally don't think the body is a big issue if like you say you don't have any preference in terms of handling, that's usually the only thing to consider as there really is very little in it. Surprised you were not bothered either way though, they feel quite different and are different to operate in terms of button layout etc.

Excellent advice and much appreciated!

I went in today to get the 450D in the end...OUT OF STOCK.

When to another store, they had one, BUT it looked like someone had kicked the box in!

Will do an online search and find someone who has it in stock so I can go get it.

On the positive side though, gives me more time to think!!!

I'd grab the D60 and 2 lenses over the 450D. That will give plenty of room to learn and less limitations in regards to your equipment.

not the newer IS version of the 18-55, the old one was utterly crap

Went to Jessops today to make the purchase... the guy behind the counter tried advising me to buy the D60!

Have to admit, the build of the D60 seems very tough!!!

Arghhh, stuck in limbo again and can't decide!

There's nothing wrong with the build quality of the 450d. Not sure you should really be comparing the 450d and the D60 though, like I said in another thread the 450d has the edge in quite a few areas. However personally I'd wait until the 500d comes out and then pick up the 450d on the cheap.

I don't get why you want us to make the decision for you.

Whichever you buy will be more than good enough for your needs.

Aye, I agree; although I can't really talk as I made almost exactly the same thread about 5 months ago. :) I know things are a lot clearer for me now than they were back then though.

Still, like Dan says, neither will let you down DeeKay.
