Thursday 22nd July 2010 - Mid Season Prep

After a month of not even touching the car we returned to it with new enthusiasm. Lots of things to sort out and check over, as well as a few additional improvements.

The car had a big check over and oil change. The drivers seat was a little loose, the coil mounting bracket had snapped and we had to change the broken alternator. Kind of used to doing that job now. Other than that its in pretty good shape.

We are taking some guests out for a ride at Silverstone soon, so needed to fit another seat. A ride in the car was also given away in a charity raffle at Cherwell Edge Golf Club, the winners can't wait. Also the mirror caps have faded badly so they came off and had a respray.

We finally got around to fitting some gauges, a rev counter and temperature gauge. Fitted well to the steering cowling. They are an acquired taste but work and do the job.

Had a volt meter kicking around so fitted it into the redundant heater vent on the drivers side.

Up until now we have had 2 sets of wheels. One with our race tyres and a crap set with some road tyres on. Finding wheels to match with the right offset was difficult so we took the decision to swap to different wheels that all match. We settled on standard 172 OZ F1 wheels. They are a little heavier than what we have been using but in plentiful supply.

The problem was that with the camber we run on the car, the tyres were rubbing the springs. We always intended to increase the track width with spacers at some point anyway. We also fitted a new, better stud kit.

The front track increased by 60mm and the rear by 20mm. We had to get the rears machined to fit but they fill the arches nicely now

That was our summer list complete. Some stuff has found its way onto the winter job list, witch is growing all the time. But we've done the urgent stuff. After we've scared our guests at Silverstone we intend on doing some more setup work to get a better balance on the new tyres.

Just a set of rear pads to go in and the car is ready for Silverstone.

Weve raised the ride height on the passenger side and borrowed a race suit in XXL for when one of our sponsors has a ride.

Friday 30th July - Geometry

To prepare for our Silverstone day we had the geometry checked and reset. We had made a few adjustments to the front camber since the start of the season (and after destroying the front tyres at Anglesey) and it hadn't been setup on a full alignment gauge since.

A friend from a local garage came over to do it and after setting up the equipment and taking a few measurements he said 'How the hell did you drive that?'

The toe was quite far out and the camber uneven side to side. A few hours of careful measurement and adjustment got the car straight and ready for some decent testing on Wednesday.

One last job was to fit a new sun-strip. White, to go with our new sponsor logo
