Brakes & wheel bearings fine but one driveshaft very stiff, other side fine

  clio 1.9D 1999
I posted the other day re; a groan at specific speeds. I've had the car down at the garage, ball bearing needs replacing but I don't understand how that will cause my constant groaning noise that gets worse at speed. The wheel bearing is fine, the brakes have been checked - also fine. This only leads me to believe there is something wrong with the diff. The O/S wheel + shaft spins freely but the N/S is very difficult and is what I think is causing the racket. There is no clicking at full lock but the gaitor not the N/S is leaking.

Any ideas?
