Brake Fluid

  MG ZS180 Mk2
Hi all.

I needed to top up the brake fluid on my 182 as the STOP and brake lights were flashing when going around bends.

I went to Halfords and bought a little pot of dot 5.1. Went home and put a bit in and then when replacing the cap, it said use only 3 or 4 dot fluid.

Have I made a bit of a fluck up here? I have only put a about 100ml in and went on a 80 mile trip and the brakes were fine and no light came on.

Does it matter that I used the wrong one?

Car has done 19,000 and the pads still look like they have plenty on them.

As I said, I didn't get the light in the places I normally get it (A45 on a long bend).

But does putting 5.1 in something that only says 3 or 4 cause a problem?

Like Fred said . Your pads will be getting low causing the fluid to drop hence the lights on your dash . It doesn't take much of a drop in fluid as the little float sensor in the cap only moves a couple of mm from top to bottom .
