Bloodhound SSC 1000mph Project - Fastest Car in the World, Detailed!

Hi all, a slightly different one from me, I was called up recently to attend the Bloodhound SSC headquarters, to carry out a detail on the show car ready for a Rolex press event.

For those who don't know about the car, the Bloodhound SSC is a world land speed record project, in which they hope to hit 1000mph in just under 55 seconds, weighing in at 7.5 tonnes and pushing out 135,000bhp!

More information here -

On to the detail, the brief was to get the car looking it's best within a day, so I aimed to correct the front end, removing all swirls and scratches picked up from shows and transport, followed by spot corrections along the hull of the car.

A few before's of the car -

After a quick Finale wipedown I began on the front end of the car, correction beginning with the Rupes Bigfoot system. A few of the 50/50's below!

The entire body was then given a going over with Auto Finesse Tripple on a black pad, to add some protection and shine after a deep clean.

A step ladder was needed to get up to the roof fin!

Before with a few marks, followed by Tripple to remove marring and previous wax residue.

With the whole car Tripple'd, I gave the car a quick wipedown of AF Finale.

Leaving these final results after an 11-hour detail!

The guys at Bloodhound were very hospitable and were really happy with the finish. I was lucky to have Richard Noble (Previous land speed world record holder) set his eyes upon the car, saying it's the best it's ever looked!

Overall it was a great challenge, but very rewarding to get the car looking how it should - to match the speed!

Thanks for reading, comments and chat welcome as always.

Absolutely mental. Can it be called a car?! (Probably only just!). Great effort and nice to see something different!

My mate is working on the actual car. They recruited a lot of guys from the Army to help build it.
Sod driving it at 1000mph tho the mad heads.

Certainly some big old panels to do there!

Cool thing to be able to say you have done though, even if like mentioned above its not the actual car?

Probably not mate! They call it a car though I may just be able to get away with it!

Isn't that one a rolling model though?

Still, incredible opportunity - perhaps you'll be there for the actual event!

Yea this is the show car, and the only one that exists. The real thing won't be around until 2016, which I should hopefully have a hand in keeping clean! :)

I was thinking, its not really a car is it :p

Great work though, fair difference in those 50/50s!

Thanks mate.

That's incredible! What an honour

Indeed!

Brilliant work mate, hope you stuck your website address decals somewhere ;)

Thanks! Unfortunately not, the logos on that car are £15k for the smallest ones at the bottom of the hull. The Castrol one was £4.5m!

Hahaha!

They've got a great setup there, looks like a great place to work!

The final car will only have a 5% steering rack as well, so no 3 point turns lol

Certainly some big old panels to do there!

Yea as said, this is the show car, the final car is still in early stages.

Pretty cool job that.I was awaiting the exhaust before and after pics though:p

Haha!

It'll be extra slippery now, 1100mph is a sure thing!

Indeed, apparently the paint will be mostly stripped off at 1000mph though because it's over a salt plain, basically getting sandblasted!

  An orange one
Christ 4.5million for a sponsor sticker!!!!!

Imagine, like actually stop and imagine driving at 1000mph. What are the tyres made of?!

Just been reading that on the site in the OP actually, just incredible engineering and precision required!

Fantastic stuff!

There's a thread on PH from one of the senior engineers which is well worth a read if you're at all interested in the engineering behind it...

http://www.pistonheads.com/gAssing/...0&nmt=Bloodhound+SSC+Thread+As+Requested.....

Yeah Ive been reading that, very interesting stuff.

The actual record doesnt massively interest me, the project is largely "how to make a plane that doesnt fly" really, it has no actual use as such other than break a record, so kind of hard for me to really get interested in, but the engineering itself is absolutely awesome stuff!

F1 teams have worked with detailing to look at drag and products. Slickness counts.

Lovely work mate! Great thing to have worked on.

Swansea uni have had a big hand in designing this, when I went down there on the open day for my course they took us around the workshops where hey have a model of this. They have all the bits and bobs there where they designed the body etc. was pretty cool tbh
