bike carbs/throttle bodies.

hi all,

me and my best mate have bought a mk1 ph1 1.2 for £100 with 50k on the clocks, and we are planning on making it into a stockcar/ track car ( yes i know, small engine)

if i was to say, get 4 honda motorbike carbs/ throttle bodies, can i make them work on the 1.2 engine with modification to the inlet mani and other perameters? would this work

also my mate said, ditch the ecu ( if there is one ) and go down the dissy cap route meaning hardly any electrics to the engine.

help from the tunning guru's much appreciated :)

thanks.

Not sure but how can you run a dizzy on an engine that is designed to have and has coil packs? A dizzy goes into the block.

I did a quick google on a dizzy and it can be powered off the crank or iil pump?
Unsure how that can work tbh.

So i would need carbs and still run the ecu to make the engine run ?

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
u will need to either

-run carbs and a standalone ignition only ECU
or
-run throttle bodies and a full standalone ECU

There is probably a slot in the end of the cam (or you could add one if not) that you could use to drive one, but I really wouldnt go down that route personally.

no idea about new engines but i run bike carbs on my golf, bit of a pig to loose the ECU but all the dash electrics and sensors dont need them unlike yours, you would need an ecu to run the ABS etc

think we are going for R1 bike carbs. So will need a egnition only ecu. What makes are they?

Megajolt is a popular one.

I would go for a fuel and timing ecu instead though and run bike bodies instead of bike carbs, far easier to tune accurately.

Hmm but would a 1.2 mk1 have all those gizmo's? I personally wanted to build the 1.2 engine into an oldschool non electronic ran engine. On bike carbs.

Running the timing mechanically is going to be WAY beyond your capabilities I would think TBH mate, setting up a dizzy based on weights and springs and stops to get the correct timing curve at full throttle and then using vacuum to attempt to correct that at part throttle is a very skilled and time consuming thing to be doing. Ive been doing it for years and still hate doing so, timing on an ecu by comparison takes only a few minutes to configure the entire curve to any shape you want.

You'd be better off leaving the standard ecu to run the timing, and just add bike carbs for the fuelling if you are going to do that, the timing wont be right but it also wont be a long way wrong.

Yes i see your point, i have very basic skills when it comes to engines, i can build one but i am not a person for all the timing stuff. How off will the timing be with bike carbs and ecu ? I know it will need mapping. But my knowledge only goes so far

The more you do to the engine the further standard curve will be away from ideal, a remap could sort that though, but it would just make much more sense to be on aftermarket isntead IMHO, especially if the car will evolve over time.

Just had a word with my mate who is the other owner of the car ( joint owning ) he said if we can, the engine will be bike carb'd aftermarket cams, ported head and a custom exhaust build. Now that to me sounds like a load of technical stuff.

I warent the possibilities that an aftermarket ecu will help loads. I can wire a loom together no problem.

Can you give me a break down of what will be needed ? Please.

You need to check the rules of the series you are in, the key thing with motorsport is building to the rules not to what a load of blokes on a forum think is a good idea.
