belt fitting quote

  182 ff
just had a quote to fit 2 belts and a water pump, from another Renault dealership(I was told to shop around)..£679... labour! ,if they provide the parts..£1197.. total job time 6.6 hours, works out £102 an hour(I want a mechanic job there, part time)..it seems Renault let each dealership ,set the labour price themselves ..they just set a limit not to go over.. so if they can only charge ,up to £102.01p an hour limit....take a guess what they will charge?..

Find a specialist on here.

Should be sub £500 parts in for just the belt, or sub £600 with dephaser.

Where are you based?

If SW - Dan@SJM
If SE - Mike Woodford/Engine Dynamics/Mark Fish
If midlands - Mick @ Diamond Motors.
If NW - Birchdown/ RS Tuning.

Well worth the drive to any of the above guys (by reputation).

INSIST that they use genuine/Gates parts, and use the correct locking tools if you go anywhere other than those above, because if they don't use the tools, they will do it wrong. No matter how many they do every day.

i will have to go to one of the above..but i shouldn't have to be combing the country ,when i have 5/6 Renault dealerships within 25 miles .. thought i would get quotes 1st ,save all time and messing about..

i am applying for a part time job there.. just 10 hours a week,do me,, £4000 a month ha

So you think the full £100 an hour goes to the mech?

He'll be on £15 / hour tops, the rest pays for the building, tools, heating, lighting etc etc. It's called overheads.

If they are using genuine parts then they are undercharging in my opinion.
I think it's down to the fact they are a real specialist they prob done the job a 1000 time so can fly through it in a few hours and prob have a bunch of the parts on the shelf.

650 for a clutch thou must be a c**t of a job or are clutches expensive?

It's all well and good buying parts online but most garages won't fit them or if they do, you won't get a guarantee so if something goes wrong after they're fitted you're snookered.

they are Renault parts from a Renault dealership ..bought parts before had them fitted with a guarantee. Guess i will have to return them.. Renault part direct were doing a special deal ,before the price rise..to good to miss..i will have to return them now. then pay through the nose ,to buy them again.

Why will you be paying through the nose? If you go to one of the specialist you'll be paying the same price for the parts anyway. None of them add much if any margin on top of the price they pay.

The issue with supplying your own parts is that as you are the one that bought them, the warranty is for you. If something goes wrong you will be responsible for dealing with the supplier to get the issue resolved. Whereas if you take it to a specialist and it goes wrong, you take it back to them and they will deal with it. It's just much easier all round.

Parts are available to buy mainly for the DIY'er. I did my 197 belt, I bought the parts, the tools and did the job. I sold the tools on for the same price I paid within a week. My belt was done for <£200 + a day of my time.

if i knew what i was doing and had a garage and a ramp,i would do them myself.. i do all the other servicing myself..
looked at the tools, they are £150..rather do stuff myself, know its done properly then..maybe 197 bels are easy..i know something would go wrong, end up making more work..ha basic servicing am ok..

I wasn't suggesting you do it yourself, I just got a bit carried away with my typing. The CS masses would faint if that was suggested as it just physically isn't possible for a mere mortal to get the timing right on an F4R.

The belt on the 197 is SLIGHTLY easier as access is a bit better, other than that it's pretty much the same job.

bet you wished youd went there instead of fitting it yourself
Ohhhh yes lol the guy I bought it off had the cambelt kit done and a new alternator new battery and major service done to the tune of £860 I have a receipt yet the aux belt wasn't done,
It made me suspicious so I checked everything all shiney new apart from plugs and gear box oil which I never checked.

Why he didn't do the aux belt seems stuiped to me it was cracked and sorry looking that's why I changed it, I have a feeling the belt came off the pas pump because I didn't fit it correctly that's why it getting done at a garage this time.

I'm having both steering arms arb bushes and headlights restored so when I told him about belt he says get a kit and just give me an extra £20, I asked him about cam belt but he says he wont touch one without the tools.

its not rocket science, if you have the correct tools, you have a manual or someone to show you, have a dry place to do it..am sure anyone can do it..i know if I start it,a hurricane will arrive ,I will shear bolts..have parts left over..
i changed the air filter once, a racket socket fell down near the radiator ...took ages to get out. with a coat hanger..so a 5 minute job took ages..

With the specialists on here offering great prices and also their expertise it's totally pointless buying any parts yourself for jobs such as these...

you've right, who wants nearly 50% of genuine Renault parts..i will send them back to Renault. Let the fitter re order them. I will do what you suggest, I have 14 days to return them..

that looks well fishy..even just an aux belt is £20,needs to come off anyway..call the garage up.. say their belt has snapped ..I want a refund from the £860..might have a warranty on it..if they say they didn't fit one,say why are you stupid, you have wrecked my car.. depends how long ago the work was done..dont say you fitted it ha

I think they just wanted to save cash a belt kit is around 70
The fuel rail protecter wasn't boltted on tight and the engine cover bolts are missing and there is bolts missing from bumper and the aircon pipe so I think they rushed the job or got pissednoff with it lol.

Garage that done it is 370 miles away elite auto in warick iirc

I would contact them.. say do you fix horses? what are you like changing saddles ha can I book my horse in...
its not funny.. caused a lot of messing for you, over a extra few pound..maybe the owner didn't know..just asked for the cam belt change..now you've thinking have they done the cam belt correctly ..if they cant be bothered to tighten a few nuts..maybe they has to go and feed the horses..

Yup that's what I'm thinking, they got the timing right because its not down on power, and I took the engine mount off and looked at the belt its new can still read the writing on it and the thread at the side is not even slightly dirty the dephaser is very shiney aswell though I'm sure the cam cover is leaking slightly i think it was just done as cheap as possible

@klm182 if your close enough I would highly recommend @bloke does all my work on my track car and whenever I get 3/4 the way through something he sorts it out lol.

My belts were done in may and when I got the car the fuel rail cover was loose also and the plastic bits that hold the grill on were wedged on the side of the headlamp instead of in the holes haha. Did all the work then rushed to put it all back together.

Lol as long as the important bits were done right must just be desperate to get the car out of their sight after the job

That is what I assumed. The aux belt and tensioner sure does look nice and pretty still haha, and the receipt shows cambelt and dephaser, I am disappointed they did not do the water pump at the same time, but that was changed at the first belt change.
