Banging from top mount area when going over bumps

I've noticed this has been happening over the past couple of months but it's pissing me off now.

It's mainly the N/S which is doing it, however the O/S occasionally likes pissing me off too.

Also, my steering feels vague and it likes to tramline when going over slight bumps. I'm not sure if the two are related though!

Any ideas? Dampers have been refurbed not long ago and it has newish springs, so they can be ruled out.

Forgot to mention that the ball joints have been replaced recently as well.

It sounds to be coming from the top and is a banging noise.

Milage on the car? Have the top mounts been replaced? I've been advised by a good specialist that if your replacing the oem shocks or replacing them then the top mounts aren't that far behind in wear so its probably a good idea to replace them for the sake of 100 quid or so. You could go for oem one or the solid ones that are done by many different companies.

I've got pretty vague handling too, had a look and the ball joints on the outer TRE are fubar. Guess that's not helping matters, didn't get a chance to investigate if any others areas are shot yet though.

I have been getting this noise for ages and its pissin me right off. Sounds like a loud thudding noise over harsh bumps right? I have changed EVERYTHING trying to sort it and its still there. Genuine Renault lower arm with ball joint, top mount, strut, arb bushes, and lately the subframe as it had a little setback on one wheel. Out of ideas now. Tempted to try the top,os engine mount but I really can't see it being that.

Have you tried changing the track rod ends? Or checked them for play anyway....
Could be an engine mount as you say, causing the manifold to knock on something, but thats normally under hard accelertation/deceleration rather than bumps in the road.

How old are your dampers (@jesus & rich) ?

Mine were refurbed in October and are still fine. Track rod ends, inner tie rods and ball joints all replaced recently too.

The noise has changed now from a banging to a sort of almost 'rattling' noise... like a longer, more feint but continuous noise when going over bumps.

They weren't fitted long ago either! I'm going to take the wheels off at the weekend and properly look into all the components and check for play in anything. If I can't find anything wrong then it's going to a specialist!

I'm in a similar boat with what sounds to be a similar noise. I've replaced pretty well everything like yourself, and still the noise persists.

The next thing I'm gonna have a good look at is the exhaust, see if anything has crept loose, but like you say, the noise appears to be coming from the upper region.

Let us know if you manage to solve it :)
