What is the best product for getting the grill, the diffuser and other bits of plastic on a 197 black again?

I used Autoglym tyre dressing, lasts for at least a week before reapplication is needed

autoglym bumper care is good but can be a bugger to get off paintwork so be careful!!

All those products only help for a little while.

You need to clean and prep it properly first.

Use Groundnut oil or smooth peanut butter or something.

then use one of the trim gels/restorer's. Will help it stop going back to a dullish grey.

What does the Groundnut oil or peanut butter do that makes the end result better?

Cleans the issues and contaminants out of the plastics, that causes the discolouration. The products suggested in this thread are purely protectants that go on top of a clean surface. These will only mask the problem for a couple of weeks/washes.

Yes, getting rid of the stains from polish and wax is done with the above products (oils and peanut butter). This is your long term solution, until you get polish on them again.

Do I need both the oil and peanut butter? If yes, do I apply them in a particular order?

No fella, either or. Basically rub it in and let it work in. Then remove it with a cloth, wash and then seal with one of the above products.

Think of it as a polish/paint cleanser, but for your plastics.

To add to that, if the plastics are textured use a nail brush (softer bristles than other brushes, usually).

Sorry to steal the post, never heard this before? Do you just rub the peanut butter in, how long do you wait to wipe it off etc? Thanks

The oils in the peanut butter break down the polishes and waxes. It is a case of rubbing it into the plastics and working it in. Then wiping it off to leave a clean plastic surface to protect.
