Arctic 182, And the story so far.

  Arctic 182
So the obsession with clios started a few years back, as my mrs had one thought it was a decent little car so off i went and bought my first which was a 172 cup, gas flowed head full stainless and a V6 airbox great little car loved heavy right foot action up untill a bit of a hoon down the M56 and this happened.

IMG-20101228-00235.jpg

That was the 15th of december 2010 so new bottom end was sourced and off to essex it was to collect it 16th of december and all the work started, without help from a great friend alex none of this would have happened so big thanks to him so........

Few hundred quid later and quite a few hours later it was looking like an engine again.

IMG-20101230-00256.jpg

As i bought the cup

IMG00735-20101012-0809.jpg

Then after Ktec mounts new engine more or less every gaskett 16 valves and about 2k later she was looking good but decided to cut my losses and get rid :(

Stockport-20101114-00068-1.jpg

Then bought this

IMG00025-20100313-1252.jpg

Then this (Naughty lil thing ST170 engine on bodies) was red when i bought it!

IMG00662-20100905-1818.jpg

Then a van and a diesel golf which by this time i was beginning to really crave for a clio but wanted a few creature comforts so decided upon a 182 and as blue is my fav colour and allways has been was dead set on getting an arctic blue one so for what i still think a bargain of 2k and after much debate on here this was bought.

IMG-20111030-00172.jpg

Usual 182 spec, Cruise climate leather alacantera and a few tasty add on's like yozza cat back ktec mounts brembo discs ferodo DS2500 pads Braided lines And a pannel filter had had cambelt done a couple of months ago and a part service history.

Had a few small issues with it but wrapped most of them up over christmas.

1st Filthy wheels and what was either tar or waxoyl covering 80% of both sideskirts

So off came the wheels and sideskirts for a proper clean

IMG-20111127-00288.jpg

IMG-20111127-00289.jpg

IMG-20111126-00278.jpg

Out came the auto glym tar and glue and a scraper on the sideskirts

IMG-20111127-00301.jpg

IMG-20111127-00293.jpg

Before and after (but before the G220)

IMG-20111127-00299.jpg

Then the G220 came out with a megs cutting pad using megs 83 and 80

IMG-20111127-00297.jpg

So they were sorted and fitted back on, on to the wheels

IMG-20111126-00278.jpg

The front 2 were covered in cv grease, like s**te loads of it took 4 hits per wheel and were still not 100% but will be buying a stiffer brush and some strong tfr to sort them properly but think the befores and afters make a hell of a difference

IMG-20111126-00275.jpg

IMG-20111126-00269.jpg

IMG-20111126-00277.jpg

IMG-20111126-00273.jpg

Gave them a coat of Autoglym super resin polish followed by 2 coats of Autoglym EGP and poorboys naural look dressing and were looking good

IMG-20111126-00282.jpg

IMG-20111126-00285.jpg

With that now sorted another small job started to tap and that small job was the dephaser pulley :S so on with cambelt tensioners and dephaser, not too many pictures of ths because i wasnt covering my phone in oil :nono:

IMG-20111228-00467.jpg

Sorted all quiet now and on to the next issue which was wet footwells all the way around the car! and some very very steamy windows:eek:
Turned out to be 8 small holes through the floor of the car parralel on both sides which to me points out that an one point some baloon has had neons fitted! so seats out carpet out all insulation etc.

IMG_0386.jpg

So cleaned them up keyed the area and gave it a bit of isopon metalic filler sanded down and re-fitted the interior after a good clean with my new sealy wet vac. Whilst i was there one of the rear and one of the front speakers wernt working so flicked the grills off and connected the speaker wire and hey presto it works.

Whilst bolting the seats back in i noticed that the exhaust mount had cracked off the exhaust and was blowing so popped down the garage and did my first ever bit of welding, im well aware that its pidgeon s**t welds but it don't blow anymore and its still holding to this day

IMG-20111105-00183.jpg

IMG-20111105-00189.jpg

So bit by bit im ticking all the jobs off just need to sort the re-circ on the blowers as when i push the button on the climate i cant hear anything moving, Steering wheel is off being re-trimmed in mercedes benz leather and carbon thumb grips are on the way, think all in all ive had a quite productive christmas.

Oh and spotted these earlier in the week http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320822137516?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 no bids till right at the last minute and think ive got myself a bargain just got a bit of a slog, manchester to kent to pick the suckers up but for that price i certainly am not moaning.

  Arctic 182
Yep get the steering wheel sorted poss buy some carbon dash strips fit trophy wheels eibach sportlines or decent coilovers and give it a couple of smashes round oulton park and see where it goes from there.

  Arctic 182
Cheers lads means a lot to have put a graft in and it's not just me that appreciates it. :D can do everyting to do on the cambelt but allways get alex to time it up just to be safe. Kinda wished i'd become a mechanic rather than a sparky now though fettling with cars beats pulling cables in every day of the week!

  Arctic 182
It is mate yes, and DO and i mean really do belive all the hype about the stuff its magic goes on like pis* leave in 10 mins and its like treacle and pulls anything off the wheels and bodywork but not the paint.

  Arctic 182
So car overfueled washed all 4 bores, flushing fuel in to the oil and killing the bottom end so this weekend has consisted of dropping the engine out.

Engine box and most bits are now stripped off, have ordered ARP rod bolts, Crank is coming out of the new lump for a polish and a balance and new ACL big ends.

Will be putting in new valve stem oil seals and piston rings to give the engine a fighting chance as well a new lambda amongst other things.

Whilst its out this week im gonna give the rocker and the inlets a bit of a clean and paint just to tart up the bay a little.

Will keep you all posted on progress this week........

From what we can gather the oil has mixed with petrol and thinned it too much hit 7k a couple of times didnt feel quite right and now she's dead on to clio engine #4.................................Deep joy.

Will be up and running by next sunday i hope then a nice shitty gay ass 500 miles of running in !

  Arctic 182
Basically the lambda meter's the un burnt fuel in the exhaust and therefor adjusts the air/fuel mixture for optimum performance ive had a duff lambda for a bit and its overfueled the car so much that the fuel past the piston rings and in to the sump thinning the oil to a piss like consistancy and killing it, so tempting right now just to chuck a match at it 2nd one ive done now but this one was'nt quite as impressive or explosive as the last one.

  Arctic 182
I got a heavy right foot was lumpy on idle and was a fucker to start once or twice but never ever thought it would end up like that but hey ho s**t happens usually to me.

And as for luck with clios! dont have luck full stop mate look at the state of the van i had before the clio.........................

Not took the old lump apart yet mate, needing all the time i have on this lump at the minute.

Lucky for me as i took the bottom pulley off, the gudgeon pin that keeps the cambelt spinning with the crank was missing so if i'd just swapped the bottom ends over i would have been fubarrd again.

  LY R26 #288
Correct me if I'm wrong but it's a floating set up and all the pulleys should spin freely when their not tightened up :p

When the cams are locked with the timing tool and the crank is locked with the tdc pin, you should be able to rotate all the pulleys freely with the belt on when their not tightened up.

  Arctic 182
Your correct to a point top end wise but the bottom pulley that the cambelt goes on to that connects to the crank has a cut out as does the crank that a small pin goes in to that keeps it locked to the crank and that was not there!

Tonight's Progress

Crank went off to princess engineering to be checked polished and matched up for bearings as have the conrods, is going to quasarr to be lightened and balanced later in the week.
