Alternator help please - loose connection or needs replacement?

  2003 Clio dci 80
Hiya, I'd be grateful for any help please for this damsel in distress . My battery light and stop light started flickering a couple of days ago, and gradually stayed on more and more until it was lit most of the time. Voltage with the car running was ~12v when the battery light was on, and ~14v when the light was off, as to be expected. Voltage across the alternator, from big red terminal to alternator case is ~12v with the battery light on, so am I right in thinking that the alternator is fried, even tho the intermittent fault seems to point to a loose connection?

Is there anything else I need to check? I've uploaded a pic of the alternator connections - I have no idea why a wire seems to have been removed - might this be significant? Do I need to check any earthing connections on the alternator or is it just earthed through the mounting bolts! Cheers guys!

That's a plug not the remains of a wire they only use one terminal.

Might be worth disconnecting the feed from the alt and making sure its clean looks a little rusty in that pic.
