advice on ecu options for turbo conversion

  clio 182
Hi, im going to be buying a used turbo kit this week for my 54 plate 182. it comes complete but without an ecu, ive heard people have run them without but i would rather get an ecu to make it all abit smoother. i was just after advice on what ecu's are out ther that would be good for the conversion. its only going to be a low pressure conversion and i dont want to spend a fortune on something that is too good for the job. any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

Omex makes a lot of sense, its pretty antiquated now but it still works well and there are LOADS of people who know how to map it well.

i was looking at them, im gona probably look for a second hand 1, i am useless when it comes to ecu's and the wiring looms so if i sound like an idiot im sorry but when it comes to getting a loom for the omex, is it universal or do i need one suited for the 182 and what do i need to look for because i dont no whats realy ment be semi assembled and so on.

  clio 182
so im guessing thats the better route. what about the loom being universal? im giving it to a specialist to fit everything and dont want to find out ive bought the wrong loom or missing anything.

Yes its universal by virtue of the fact its just a load of wires and you have to make it fit.

Best bet is find who you want to fit it, then ask them what they wish for you to supply, rather than buy it first and hope its what they want!

this is a list of the kit im buying second hand with mostly new parts, is ther anything extra you think i will need to get it running. ino you need an extra link pipe for the 182 but is ther anything else i will need to source and is evrything appropriate for the low compression option?

you'll need to plumb in some water lines for the turbo, things like new manifold and sump gasket, new oil filter, coolant, nimbus heat shield to cover brake lines,

i'd say at least 1k for standalone ecu and mapping, then maybe 100quid of general bits and bobs

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
how much extra cost do you think im looking at

If you rock up with that lot at ktec and ask for help, at least a couple of grand I would think.

If you are trying to do a turbo conversion for sensible money, then I would think that KTEC is about the last place you'd want on the list, they arent really about budget conversion from what I have seen.

so the kits pretty much ther apart from the ecu, i live in cumbria so thers no chance il be driving that far south ha, i was just gona call them for advice on other possible parts i may need, just for more advice realy. thers a guy localy that evry1 swears by, deals with racing engines and 500+ bhp cars for a living with a dyno so ive asked him for a quote. do you think it would be worth getting the turbo reconditioned, ive been told its fine but if its not too much i thought it may be worth considering, maybe just the seals or having it checked over? or is it abit pricey?

I plan on having mine rebuilt, looking at prices around £250 for a recon i think

You mean Jdm?

Barnes corsa seems to work ok but the map they put on Gary hurnes nova was horrific. So seems to be a lottery. IMHO you would be better going to scoff.

yeh jdm, i havnt had any work done ther but ive heard he was good and didnt no of anywer else, who or wher is scoff? come to think of it my friends glanza got done ther and it was always having problems, cud of been his dodgy diy efforts tho

  clio 182
il take a look at them, do they just do mapping or instalation aswell? i havnt seen that renault 5 but it sounds dangerous ha. im goin to buy this turbo kit in an hour, 2-3 hour drive cross country, hope to have it ready for the summer. how do you know of jdm anyway, do u live in the north west?

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Give Scoff a ring mate, he can do pretty much anything with a car, but if he doesnt want to do some bits of it or thinks it would make more financial sense for you to do it then Im sure he will tell you.
