A/C and drier

I bought a new A/C compressor because my old had broken.
Is it necessary to install a new drier?
Can I use the old one?

broken in what way ? if it has internally exploded i would change the reciver/drier and the thermal expansion valve then fully flush the system out, if the magnetic switch ( to turn it on ) has failed so you have just replaced the full compresser it should be ok with a full system re-charge
